Hi there, I’m just looking for some help figuring out why this girl is looking so dark. She’s about 31/2-4 inches and was sold to me as female. She molted about 2 months ago, and I think she had some trouble with it. She flipped herself back over but stayed curled up for quite some time, what looked like death curl. She perked back up but she’s seemed a little off ever since and some of the hair on her back legs is missing, as well as the super dark coloration. I’m sorry if I missed any important information, this is my first time posting a question on here, any help would be appreciated!

That darkness looks like a male, but I’m not see boys parts. Did her sucking stomach molt properly? Was it a “wet molt”?

Yes, I believe it was a wet molt. And I was worried about her potentially being male as well, but I bought her from what I think is a pretty reputable seller and they said she was a confirmed female (but I know mistakes can always happen).

I’m sorry to say, although I have not experienced this yet, none of the wet molts I’ve heard of turned out well. Still don’t give up hope. Just provide easy access to water.
I currently have a MM H pulchripes and their male parts are obvious.

Thanks for the advice, she seems alright otherwise. Still eating and somewhat active, just very dark and didn’t really put on any size after the molt. Hopefully she can make it to the next one and gets back to normal!

It appears someone sold you a very old specimen.
She’s still quite small though, 4 inches might be an even be a bit of a stretch. Probably closer to 3-3 1/2. I know H. Pulchripes don’t get super large, but isn’t that still a bit small for an older female?

Generally you can be old and small. It sure reminds me a male though, and not a female. Check the molt to confirm.

Thanks, I will have to wait until the next molt as I don’t have the last one anymore (I should have checked then but I wasn’t suspicious before).

It is pretty, I do miss those bright blues though! Here’s a picture from before the last molt and the other picture is from last night (the nickel was just for size comparison).

I'm not sure if it is the same phenomenon, and I'm by no means an expert for this species, but something I have noticed with my H. pulchripes regarding the leg coloration is that after a molt, the legs are usually quite dark, and it takes a while for the blue color to come back after a molt. I keep my fingers crossed for your T to turn out ok. You say she molted 2 months ago - has she taken food since? What behavior exactly has been "off" since she molted?

Yes, she’s taken food and she seems fairly normal, she just kind of tucks her legs in and almost lays down a lot (not death curl). It’s kind of hard to explain, if I move the enclosure or gently blow on her she hops right up though. I think it’s just resting, but none of my other T’s “rest” in that position. Thanks for the reply, and I was hoping that was the case but I guess we’ll have to just wait and see!

My H pul did this, my friend's H pul is doing this, i dont know what is it they do, but it seems H pulchripes specific
Theyre kinda sitting on their knees with just the front legs, right?

Yes! That’s exactly it. I only have one of them so I didn’t have anything to compare it to. Must be just a little quirk I guess.

Mine did the same multiple times, and she is a young adult specimen, made me a bit worry when I first experienced it, but she gave an immediate and healthy response as I moved the tank, so it was quite a relief.
