Just a few hours ago, I was opening the back door and I saw a spider that was one of the biggest I've seen outside/in the wild. Since it's getting cold outside, I captured it. It's currently in a small kritter keeper. I think I've identified it as Araneus diadematus. It's a large female and it looks absolutely awesome. In case anyone was wondering it was found in southern Ontario, Canada. Is there anything I should know about keeping this species? Any special care requirements?

I think I saw this spider too around here. If you found it in web it might be some kind of orb weaver like the one I saw here. I don't know much about spiders though but my guess is that it might die soon due to the cold winter it usually faces. Wait for more people to reply because I'm not sure, just sharing.

It wasn't near a web when it was found. If it is the species I think it is then yes, it's an orb weaver.

i just keep mine in a exo terra 18x18x24 with lots of sticks a fake plant, water cap it will be like a couple days before it will start webbing and to get it to make the web that actually catches the food ,what i did i had to sacrifice a baby garden spider same species for food and that got him to make the actual web, there isnt any special care they will just love being inside and having free food, pre kill your crickets too the web can handel a large cricket if its dead and just like move the cage just a little bit to make the cricket shake and it will start spinning the cricket and eat it . they are not the best for handling because they always try and drop off you lol, hope i helped a bit im still learning about the spider myself :)

I believe the majority of the orb weaver spiders usually tend to have that big, mushroom top looking abdomen. I found one here in Wisconsin a year ago as well and was in awe - i never usually just find those around. Very neat find!

I caught a wolf spider that is at least 3 inches DLS yesterday morning. My son was a little tripped out.
