When I lived there we had a centipede which burnt grass underneath it. Does anyone know what kind it is? I suppose it gives off an acid?

could it have been a flat millipede? can't they put out some pretty powerful secertions?

Just look for a "Chinese striped leg". As for the locality data, it was collected and can be found from Southern China in the Guangxi, Guangdong and Fujian provinces.

Edit: I don't think they're available in the US/Canada as of yet.
