Any excuse will do. LOL
I don't consider handling the same as maintenance/care that has to be done.
I once had a friend of mine hold one of my t's, it fell and died. So unless it is necessary to handle one I don't. It was my bad experience that made me feel this way.

handling serves more importance
than your own gratification
it allows one to get more comfortable with the spider and
makes it easier for to maintenance, breeding
feeding, inspecting, for the following reasons.
It allows the owner to get a "feel" of the tarantula
and one to understand it more. If one understands
the tarantula the owner will be less
skittish when doing maintenance or other chores.
Being skittish will only kill your tarantula.

If your nervous about handling
place the tank on a bed or something
cushioning and handle ON the bed so it wont
fall and you will be less nervous.

Handling IMO is just a phase that most
people go through until they are comfortable

i stopped handling mine because Im comfortable with
them, the only time i do so if they are new to my collection,
or transporting or for maintenance and inspecting,

The most important thing
all ways stay alert
You're spot-on for the most part. But it's a huge fallacy to assume that handling is a phase that "most people" go through until they are "comfortable." Some people aren't comfortable with the idea in the first place for whatever reason, and never handle.

Handling by beginners usually (but not always) comes from either one of two things: Curiosity / ignorance, or the desire to "push the limits," as it were. Those who were unaware of the dangers and become wise to the practice, will either stop (suddenly, or gradually), or figure out how to handle appropriately. Those that push the limits will either: stop when they've had enough (or a bad experience), perfect their techniques (and minimize the risks involved), or stupidly carry on with enthusiastic trepidation.

Honestly, it's a split down the middle between handlers and non-handlers. Both sides are butting heads over the same side of the equation, and not realizing it. Everyone has a reason for their actions on this matter.....One person's reason only becomes an "excuse" when it is not in line with another person's viewpoint.

You all are being like Eric. (go-terps)

You are over thinking everything and making it TOO technical... If you want to hold your T then fine. Do it. but be careful when you do, like hold it close to the ground or maybe even over your bed to avoid injury to your T. Getting it out is simple. I just hoax the T on the side of the glass up to the edge and put my hand on the other side so the the T will crawl over and what not...

Simple lol

Ah, he does this often huh? ;)

Well, I guess its all up to the individual owner whether or not they want to handle their T. But just be warned, if the T does get pissed off, your the one that is going to get bit.
