I like to look on Craigslist to find spiders that people are getting rid of. Sometimes people who don't know what they have or are getting out of the hobby will have good prices on their spiders.

Other than that, just establishing good relationships with your vendors that you buy with often will frequently lead to freebies and gifts. I think a solid 1/3rd of my collection were freebies. I mean, the B smithi in my profile pic was a gift to me from a vendor I am friends with. It pays to be nice :)

This is really good advice! Also do you know how to find vendors then? I’m new to the hobby but am ready to expand!

I recommend going to your local reptile shows, where there will typically be tarantula vendors or reptile vendors who also sell tarantulas. Speak with the vendors there, look them up, see how their reviews are. Once you find a vendor or two that you like, you can follow their social medias and email them before the shows to ask them for their species list (do this a few days to a week in advance, because right before a show, vendors are getting ready to pack up and set up a booth, and might not have time to check their email). That way, you can ask to pay in advance and get the best pick of what they'll have at the show, or at least save money on shipping.

As you establish relationships with vendors, they'll sometimes slide you freebies. Really, you're just making friends with people you share hobbies with, but if a vendor treats you well, you're likely to send them more business, so chatting them up at shows is a good tactic.

I don't do this with the goal of getting freebies, I just like to talk to people about tarantulas, but making friends with vendors at shows doesn't hurt.

I had a good find / score on CL last weekend, so its definitely worth checking out, I feel like I kinda rescued them as they were being kinda neglected I feel
Picked up an AF emilia, AF P. sazimai and a rough suspect penultimate male B. hamorii for 250 US beans !
You would be suprised what you can find on CL!

Otherwise, you can find adult A. chalcodes, T. albos and A seemanis for fairly reasonable prices from a few vendors however, they will be WC, which I have mixed feelings about

Some ppl move and give Ts for cheap, you can also find really good deals here on the classifieds.

When you “rescue“ a neglected animal, your just helping the seller to see its a bargain, and so he gets more animals to neglect even if you saved some Ts.

This was from a person who had lost interest in the hobby and was getting out , not a "seller" / store. so......

Yeah, then you hear about people getting these WC adults and they drop a sac, which makes me a little sad because that sac of spiderlings could have really helped maintain the local population where they were collected from, but on the other hand if the buyer properly cares/ raises them then more slings available to the hobby which here in the US we really need to step up our breeding game, Europeans are lightyears ahead of us when it comes to captive breeding Ts.

Then again, the slings of most of the commonly seen WC species grow at a snails pace, and I mean no malice by this- but this thread kinda says it all.

I got a juvi B emilia and G rosea off craigslist for $100 total. Good deal for me since I had wanted a rosie for a long while and they're so expensive here in the states now it seems!

Do you have no private breeders and / or clubs in the States? This is how we get our animals in Europe; usually at a fraction of the price!

We do have a few breeders and a few- but far between clubs, but like I mentioned it isn't even a fraction compared to what you folks in Europe enjoy.

It's a shame, it can be so easy. But here too human greed will destroy everything sooner or later!

Sustainability and environmental conciousness has a lot to do with it I believe, for instance in your country there are strict laws regarding recycling, where as here in America the majority of the population dont bother to recycle at all.

I feel like when you hear of Europeans collecting WC specimens, its generally for the purposes of breeding/ broodstock.

Where as majority of WC specimens sold here in America are mostly just getting a price tag slapped on them/sold in a pet store.

Le sigh....

For me it is nice to hear that from the "mouth" of an American.
Here we often have the impression that in America one thinks the Europeans would still live on trees ...
Personally, I also breed - on a small scale - and sometimes give away spiders for free if I notice my counterpart has a low income. It is important to me that you stick together within the hobby, if I need money I go to work!

Thats totally not the case, especially you Germans, in both of my main hobbies reefkeeping and inverts+arachnids its pretty much common knowledge that when it cones to methodology and hobby advancement you Germans are many many years ahead of us in the USA.
In reefkeeping especially, all of the most cutting edge methods and products come from Germany.

Its not just hobby related either, the overall efficiency of how your country is ran, again, many years ahead of the US.
Not trying to be a kiss butt, its just fact!
