Please elaborate. :D

A T blanket is a two old comforters I sewed together and stuffed a load of that fluffy polly fill between. Quilt tacking it all over for that cusiony look and feel. It's thick and springy and soft. Handling of any T only happens on it sitting down. This helps make it safer for the T, and a more controled experience all around. The twins can lay on the edges and watch them wander around while they draw pictures and make observations.

It's just somehting I started with the twins first shot out of the box. Having a T blanket rule is just another " fun " factore I use to try and make their hobby more fun and interesting for them, more interactive, and more safe and controled.

Like getting your kids into the habit of putting on a bike helmet or washing their hands after a trip to the lil critters room.

That is an excellent idea alright! Very cool. It sounds cozy.

I want my own T blanket now, and extra fuzzy bugs to observe on it. :D

Nixy-
It is refreshing to hear about parents who know how to be parents. We have our 7 week old son and reading your post sounded like how Jill and I have discussed raising our son. Honesty, without being sugar-coated, we have felt will allow one's child to trust and respect their parents-at least until they are teens.
I have an Uncle who never talked down to me and always gave me a straight answer. I never forgot that. My parents were pretty good about telling the truth but they left quite a few things as taboo. This made me realize that whatever you are not honest with your children about and make something taboo, later in life they may run to it even if it isn't good for them. You sound proud of your children and later in life they will appreciate you more than you can imagine. Sounds like you should be teaching a parenting class.

I use a king size pillow with a jungle pillowcase on it!!!

This thread reminded me of an incident with one of my children. Sam was reading and walking at the same time. He tripped over the black German Shepherd on the dark green carpet ("I didn't see her Mom!"), fell into the corner of a wall, and ended up with 6 stitches in the forehead. Just goes to show you, even a German Shepherd that protects her kids vehemently can be deadly too!

re. maculata and pokes

I know what you mean Nixy. The pokes are very stunning, but I've already limited my self to one potentially dangerous("hot") T. Usambara baboon. There are so many "cool" T's out there to choose from.

Resist the temptation

I didn't imply that a poke and the usambara were both terstrial, just that I chose the usambara over a poke, more for color than anything. And that will be my only "hot" T.

Oh.........

I think it is every parents choice to keep what they want in the house with their kids, as long as they keep it responsibly.

But............Nixy, didn't you critisize Safety pin-up for keeping Pokes in the same house as her children? I remember it was quite an arguement. And if you changed your mind, what caused the change of heart?

I did not criticise for the keeping of poecs in the household with children.
But for the overall seeming attutude that it was nothing to be considered as a risk or that general. "Screw whoever lives with you, get the poec!" attitude in the thread by many.
It was my opinion then, and is now, that when anyone asks advice on keeping Any creature that can hospitalise a grown man with kids caution should be the byword.
At the time the thread was about a younger member buying a poec without much in the way of experience with large fast arborials that has younger siblings.
It was resolved betwen he and his parents.
Which is where it belonged.
I was of course flamed to hell but I still hold my opinion that Any potentialy hazerdous creature of any species of the animal kingdom be considered in a more responsable light then. Just do it.
I ahven't changed my mind. If or when I do get one is still in the air as the one I was Considering was sold.
My kids are first and formost in my life. Nothing else is more important. Ever.

I would have to agree with loosey on this issue. But it would seem to be of little concern to the rest of this board.I have a 2 year old .The only way I'd get a so called "hot" T is if I had a extra room I could pad lock plain and simple. Your a parent first Tarantula keeper second. Also remember my parents telling me alot of this I didn't listen to.When kids get at that age where everything you say no to is like the fight with pressing the shiney red button.

I grew up from day one with guns in the house. My dad made it perfectly clear that they were off limits. I was terrified to even THINK of disobeying my dad. On my 8th birthday, I got a .22 rifle. And I NEVER touched without dad's permission.

Times sure have changed! I have to keep my gun in a combination locked box, I don't keep ammo in the house, and the kids don't even know where the box IS. I'm too afraid that they would go behind my back and try to show off, even though I have done my damndest to be a good discliplinarian.

Anyway, as I have said ad nauseum.... it's Nixy's decision! If Joe Blow wants to collect pokies with 3 year old quadruplets in the house, that's his decision as a parent. If Jane Smith wouldn't dare have a tarantula in her home with her 10 year old kid, that's her decision as a parent. I certainly have my opinion on the subject, but I DON'T have the right to tell anyone else how to raise their children.
