Cellar spiders are one of my favorites. I used to keep a few of them as pets. I even bred them once, but the babies all escaped because I didn't have it completely sealed.
I used to play with them at work sometimes, when i used to work in pet stores- they liked to live in the stacks of aquariums, and every so often i'd come across a sac that just hatched, the babies were so cute!

One day I plan on trying a large semi-communal setup (they will cannibalize each other, but if I provide enough space, and enough hiding places, I think I can minimize that, as they don't move around a whole lot, so they wouldn't interfere with one another) with the marbled ones (different species, they are prettier IMO). I just haven't come across a suitable container, as I'd need something that I could open to toss food in without disrupting their webs too much, and it would have to be otherwise sealed pretty well.

Just buy a large display container and drill a hole large enough for a cork to fit into. If you want to get fancy you can make a sliding lid.. all of the tools you need are at Michals just ask one of the workers and they will be more than glad to help you.:)

Just dont tell the pretty lady Im keeping spiders in it or they will:eek:\

It works very well and will minimally bother the webs made by them

They are reported to eat other spiders, and I've observed them eating P. tepidariorum.

Have you ever tried touching them? If you barely touch their legs as they're hanging in the web, many will do a cool defensive move, where they swing their body around in a fast circle.

Funny you say that because the only reason I saw it was because it looked like it was vibrating in mid air it looked like a big mosquito

cool pic! these are pretty cool spiders, I had one living in the corner of my bed room for the longest time. He wasn't bothering me, so I didn't bother him.

When I was a kid we had these spiders in our house (probably not the same species - I was living in Cairo, Egypt. :) ) They built ugly webs on the ceilings, especially up in the corners. Anyway, my mom would tear them all down, but I made her leave the ones that were in my room. We also had a lot of mosquitos, but I was the only person in the house who didn't have them buzzing around and biting me at night, because the spiders caught them.

We've had those cellar spiders in every house i've ever lived in. I think they're really cool. I have a friend who rented a house for 2 years that had a 3 car garage which was absolutely filled with these guys. Their webs would catch ping-pong balls sometimes. There were some very large specimens too, I had no idea they got that big. Looks like yours is pretty hefty too.

That's probably the best pic i've ever seen of one. I like how you can see the fuzziness on the abdomen and the sensory hairs all over the legs. Nice work!

The only reason I think I don't like them is they always seem to have some spider, insect or another in their web that I wanted alive. LMFAO! Sounds selfish but I'm like, "DANG! A lynx spider. If only I'd been here 10 minutes ago!" {D

We've got about 6 loose in our bedroom. I just leave them there, they catch loose crickets and any pest insects. We had a female in one of our larger enclosures to eat the fungus gnats and she produced an eggsac. The surviving offspring and the mother escaped into our room and we just let them be
