Although I am collecting Ts primarily for my own interest, I am also making a native species collection of a number of organisms, including Ts, if I can get any. Problem is, I can't seem to find anyone who sells any of the natives. I assume to sell them they would have to be captive bred. Short of that, I guess I would just have to find someone who has captured some and is willing to pass them along. Does anyone have any, or know of somone who does?

The species native to California include the following. I don't know what the current status is of all these names. If anyone knows more in that regard, let me know.

Aphonopelma brunnius
A. californica
A. clarum
A. cratius
A. cryptheus
A. eutylenum
A. leiogaster
A. marxi
A. phanus
A. rileyi
A. radinum
A. reversum
A. rusticum
A. steindachneri
Avicularia caIifornica

I would also like to find some native California wolf spiders. I don't have names for these right now.

Everyone should bookmark this site: http://research.amnh.org/entomology/spiders/catalog81-87/THERAPHOSIDAE.html It is at any given time the most updated and accurate (albeit there are some shortcomings) list of Theraphosidae species.

At any rate, A. californica is listed as a nomina dubia, which doesn't address whether it is possibly/probably ArachnoJoost's Brachypelmides ruhnaui. But, if it is, Brachypelmides is officially synonymised with Brachypelma, making it Brachypelma ruhnaui, or the Mexican Golden Redrump which is available in the pet trade.

Mike "Troll" in Martinez, or Scott Bemis in Fresno (Tarantula Ranch) may have some or know where to get them.....might be too late in the year to collect now unless you want the mature males out wandering around.

I could be wrong about this, but it seems to me I've heard there's some sort of regulation against selling native Californian species in California?

The article :)
Nice article. Thanks!

Of course, it would be illegal to collect in the preserve, but I bet there are places nearby where they could be found. I will certainly alert some of my students when they go home for Thanksgiving. Maybe a few will still be wandering.

Joy, I believe you are correct, and thus my mention that I didn't think anyone would have them for sale. Basically it would have to just be some nice person who was willing to send one to me.

I believe the law also forbids selling them even if they were captive bred, although don't quote me on that. I just know that babies of wild caught California Kings cannot be sold.

I already have that site bookmarked, I just hadn't checked there yet. Shame on me. :8o I did check another site which was helpful, http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~stevelew/socMYG.html. Now it loks like I need to do some more homework to pare the names down to what they should be.

As for A. californica, a dubious name often means it is an invalid name, not a synonym, or it would be listed as such. It could also mean that it is so mixed up that no one knows what to do. In any case, if you or anyone really does know whether it is actually Brachypelma ruhnaui I would love to know.

Thanks,

Bryan

I'm soo SOO sorry to necro this. I couldn't resist.

But the "native species" rule is for reptiles, amphibians, and fish, not non-crustacean arthropods.
