Baboon list

In a nutshell, anything African. It's a long list. Also a list I don't have.

Whether any African T is considered a baboon, including subfamily Ischnocolinae, makes a comprehensive list of baboon spiders difficult.
Off hand, African genera I can remember (I'm positive there are others):
Augacephalus
Eucratoscelus
Stromatopelma
Pterinochilus
Ceratogyrus
Citharischius
Hysterocrates
Heteroscodra
Encyocratella
Idiothele
Harpactira
Harpactirella
Ischnocolus
Heterothele
Monocentropus

This is a list of African tarantulas by genus and sorted by subfamily, made using The World Spider Catalog ( http://research.amnh.org/iz/spiders/catalog/INTRO1.html ) and The Tarantula Bibliography ( http://www.exoticfauna.com/tarantulabibliography/ ). Whether you want to restrict the term "baboon spider" to the Harpactirinae subfamily or apply it to all African tarantulas is up to you. If you notice any errors, anything I left out, please let me know.

Really? So West and fellow researchers feel that H. macs and S. cals are closely related to avics and taps? That is interesting!

That is actually true folks.
Ilive here in south africa, and in one of our 11 native languages, namely afrikans, its called a "bobejaan spinnekop".
This is a name that was brought about by the native tribes.
The baboons hand issue is an interesting story to read about, and is very controversial, but there is alot of lore in african culture concerning baboons... Since they also use to burn what they thought were abnormaly large baboons because they thought they were witches...
But this was very long ago...
