Water dish will allay all concerns about humidity, how much of the substrate to wet, how often/where to mist etc. I cut down a water bottle cap that has a little raised ring on it. to make a tiny water dish. It's essentially a long lasting water drop. If you think water dish would help- get creative with water dishes. Anything of appropriate size and holds water will do the job. Also tarantulas cannot drown so that's not a concern.
This sling of different species is way smaller(can just barely see it above the dish) than your 1/2" pulchra. That's a trimmed down water bottle cap in middle.

pic of cap- it's the ring in the middle I use as dish for the tiny slings. Larger slings and small juveniles get the whole cap:

Coco fiber is a commonly used substrate. Great for dry, semi moist or moist setups.
