Pamphobeteus machala breeding (breeder = The Spider House)
Initial Breeding Date
30th Sept 2023
Successful
Yes
Special Notes
Conditioning
Female moulted early 23, was not kept any warmer than others in the heated room (23°C day and 18°C night are the temperature parameters during the autumn/winter months). Ravenous feeder up to and post mating so had plenty of bulk/reserves.
Pairing
The MM was seen to make an insertion 30th Sept 23 (see screenshot shot from video). .
Observations
On 2nd.pairing attempt a couple of weeks later, the female was having none of it and the.male was caught and killed before I was able to intervene
Post Mating Care
6 months after the only known insertion, an egg sac was produced (late March 24). The enclosure was allowed to dry out which is recommended for most Pamphobeteus. The female was on the top shelf so there was likely to be slightly elevated temperature range from the 23/18 that is the average across the middle shelves.

The female held on tight to the egg sac and barely moved from her nesting place.

The sac contained EWLs (approx 200) with no infertile eggs noticea ble.

All EWLs were placed in the incubator and spaced out so they were not touching.
Time & Care
Egg sac
The egg sac appeared to be very large. Appprox 3inch diameter (see pic) and was pulled after 42 days See pic of the opened sac.

Sling development
The EWLs were kept at a constant temp of 26°C, suspended over water by a stocking with a tray of water also inside the incubator so that humidity was high (80 to 90%). The incubator also contained x 2 versi EWLs which were alo pulled at the same time as the Pamphobeteus.
Final Details
After approx 3 weeks all EWLs had turned into nymph stage, still with the yolk sustaining them but "looking" like spiders.

From june 24 they started to go darker and huddle back together. From mid July 24 onwards, dark patches were clearly visible on abdomen as was the Christmas tree patterns as hair started to develop underneath. Early August all nymphs moulted into L1 Slings. Approx 2 cm+ DLS which was a massive size increase from nymph stage.

All slings rehoused to avoid any risk of cannibalism early Aug 24
In total, 204 L1 Slings were rehoused.

This review will hopefully help others who plan to breed this species.
