Heteroscodra Maculata bite on hand
Bite/Sting Date
010-01-2016
Pain Level
Excruciating pain.
Circumstance
Pulling her out to handle and show her off.
Size
4"-4.5"
Damage
Light bleeding, pin marks, swelling, redness
Symptoms
I was bit on my the top of my left hand, in the webbing of my thumb and index finger. The initial bite felt like a wasp sting. A little more intense than a bee sting. Within seconds, it felt like someone torched a long nail for 10 minutes and hammered it into my hand. Within minutes, my whole arm was on fire. I started sweating profusely. I even started stuttering on my words, which may have just been nerves and adrenaline. The pain went down quite a bit within the first few hours, but still felt it for about 3 days, and couldn't close my hand for about a week. I never experienced any nausea or vomiting, surprisingly.
Medical Attention
I went to my local hospital since it was my first bite. (still my only bite experience) They marked the red area with a pen and had me wait to see if it was expanding or contracting. They gave me some pain medication which did absolutely nothing. I dont remember what they gave me unfortunately. It went down a very little bit by the time I left about 2 hours later.
Lingering effects
The pain lasted about 3 days. I couldn't close my hand for about a week. The first 4 or 5 days I would have mildly painful muscle spasms in my thumb. The muscle spasms went on for about 8 or 9 days, but after day 5 they were painless.
Just wanted to share my experience! I hope this helps anyone determine if they want to own one of these species, or at least encourage people to please be careful while handling their tarantulas
