Initial Breeding Date
approx 1 May, 2022
Successful
Yes
Special Notes
no special preparation done. female was about 6 weeks post-molt. first and only pairing resulted in male being consumed. No subsequent pairings.
Pairing
male introduced to female's enclosure. male took his time luring female out of her area with vibrations and taps as per typical courting behavior for the species
Observations
male's front end was inside of a cork tube that the female was in, so insertion was not witnessed. male was swiftly attacked and eaten within seconds of the pairing.
Post Mating Care
no special care provided. female behaved typically, coming out nearly nightly in search of food. she was fed often but not every night.
Time & Care
egg sac was first discovered 12 July 2022 with endoscope, left with female to hatch naturally. reduced misting frequency so as to not get the egg sac wet, but enclosure was still carefully misted approximately every 3-4 days. First instars were discovered 16 August 2022 (35 days post-discovery). Babies left in enclosure another 7 days until fresh second instars were observed. Separated babies from mom on 24 Aug 2022.
Final Details
Over 70 healthy second instar babies! I was too excited to get a full count!
This is the fourth egg sac from this particular female in our care. Her approximate legspan is 3.5". She is housed in an Exo Terra 8x8x12 with cork bark and live plants. Misted normally every 2-4 days.
