She's probably my most handleable invert. She's very chill and sometimes even comes out on her own. I can easily see why this is usually recommended to someone getting their first invert, and I can stand behind such a recommendation.
That definitely explains it. That was still considered reasonably priced in the 80's. I loved looking at them back then when I saw them at the store. As I had severe arachnophobia back then I would never have bought one lol. The movie industry used the Emperor scorpion in a lot of movies. Majority of people didn't know anything about them so most thought they had death inducing venom, thanks to Hollywood.
they certainly are famous in Hollywood which is kinda funny, cause that should have been a dead giveaway that they're not even close to being deadly. Like if you wanted an animal that actors and the film crew can interact with safely, you logically should pick the calmest and least defensive species. I have no way how people were naive enough to think they'd use a deadly monster.

It was common with Hollywood and majority of people back in those days. There were no computers or Internet in most people's homes. There wasn't any mainstream science magazines and the ones like Popular Science never talked about arachnids. So unless you interacted with them where they live you wouldn't have a clue back then.
Just like Hollywood portraying NW tarantulas that kill with their venom instantly most people didn't know any better so it worked for the movie industry.
