Any chance you can get a closer picture?
When I zoom in I think I see something that looks like spermatheca, but I'm not sure.
Here is a 50× magnified picture of my 1.25" female H chilensis.
@CitizensOfTheWomb Thanks! And really nice photo! Unfortunately I only have a little magnifying glass and phone camera so I think that’s the best I can do I’m hoping to get a microscope soon.
Because this is a smaller species when full grown, the spermathecae is obvious in females at a smaller size. What is also very obvious, and should be with your individual at that size, is the epiandrous fusillae if they are male. You can clearly see the dark patch on males - even at the much smaller sizes. So, in tandem with checking for spermathecae, you should also be trying to capture ventral photos as backup.
This is my female at 2.25". Yes, she is a bit bigger, but you should already see the spermathecae clearly...
@VanessaS Thanks so much for the great info! I had a feeling I should be seeing spermathecae easily since the females don’t get a whole lot bigger. That’s good to know about ventral sexing as well - I'll give that a shot.
Do you know if that lighter oval patch on my molt above is the epiandrous fusillae? Or would that be a darker dot?
