IME it depends on the species. NWs might be timid with live prey even when hungry, ut OWs usually attack when hungry. I use live prey always at first but after a few tries unsuccessfully ill prekill. I personally would not leave a live prey item in a tiny slings enclosure for 24 hours, however.
