How would you convince that person that your veiled chameleon won't get out and infest your house? How would you convince them that your tropical fish won't infest the water pipes in your home? Consider your response as a logical response to an irrational question.

You mean my word alone won't convince them?;P

I live in Southern California and have had a number of lateralis get away from me. Certainly no infestation here. Or maybe the escaped T's have been eating them.:}

lol right, i'd need something like a university paper on it, or even a good website link... I've had so many lobsters get away and they never live.

I'm not entirely sure this is the best example. Even though its true that tropical roaches can't infest our homes, they still breed much faster and in larger quantities than any chams I know of. When persuading my mom I was care full not to use the word "breeding"; I just said that the colony can sustain itself, but can't get out of control and turn into a plague in the house. ~ Rex

Cockroaches need food, water and humidty, shelter, and heat to breed and thrive. If you eliminate any one of those items, a cockroach will die.

One of the best understandings as to why a tropical can not infest is by looking at the heat requirement needed to succesfully maintain them. All of the tropical roaches currently in the US pet trade require a temperature range of 78F-95F. The lower end is mostly a maintenance area in which the roach will live, but not reproduce.

As a direct opposite, the german roach can live in a range of 32F-70F. Since these are the same conditions preferred by man, it is no wonder that German cockroaches have adapted to living in man’s home, office, ship, restaurant and school.

There aren't papers on why tropical nonpest cockroaches can't infest for the same reason there aren't papers proving goldfish won't infest your water pipes.
Ask over at the roach forum
http://www.blattodea.net
You might be able to find someone there who has the paper you require.
here is a thread on your question.

You'd be better off here on Arachnoboards or with the Allpet Roaches Forum since you're likely at least to get a reply.

Hey Samuel,

This probably isn't what you're looking for, but I'm gonna try to help anyway. Stand back, a newbie to roaches is going to try to help! :D

From what I've heard, if you're not keeping the roaches warm enough, they won't breed: http://www.nyworms.com/dubiacare.htm. This doesn't guarantee that a few won't take residence under something warm like a clothes dryer or your fridge, and unfortunately this caresheet doesn't dismiss the possibility of them breeding even if they do get loose, especially if you're in a warm and humid climate. I'd have to say that the conditions would have to promote breeding in order to be an actual threat for infesting your home... :?

Let whoever you need to convince stick their head in here and ask. We'll tell them. We're the university of ArachnoBoards. Ranked top school in the US and Greenland. Our posts are constantly used as scientific references in research papers.

Oh well i'm sure he will change his mind after a few more months of crickets...
Maybe we should do a research project on this, and publish a paper??
@ Sarah,
Thanks for trying to help. :D I knew all of that info, and had told the guy, but he was not convinced... oh well.

I should have documented my lobster roach mass escape situation awhile back. I had at least one to two thousand on the loose. Probably more like four or five hundred, but you know how your mind plays tricks on you with escapees.

Damn things were everywhere, but died within a few weeks. Not something I'd like to repeat on purpose again, but if you'd like to then feel free. :)

You're welcome, it was worth a shot though! :) In my opinion, cockroaches are waaaay better than crickets could ever be. Have you tried telling him the bonuses about owning his own cockroach colony as compared to crickets? You most likely already hit on that topic with him, but maybe he can convince his wife to let him at least try a few. If I were married and my husband ever told me to get rid of my cockroaches, there'd be no way he'd win that argument ;)

It is a MUST for a partner to like inverts. People who don't dig inverts really aren't as fun to talk to. And usually in this country aren't really all that intelligent either. I don't know if it's connected but it happens.

Aaaanyway back to the point. I used to get the odd escape but it was very rare.
If kept right nothing walks away. Simple as that. (I know as humans in practice that doesn't work but this is what you say to the person to be persuaded.) It took a lot of persuading to get the ones in this house to accept the roaches but I stated it simply, crickets go everywhere roaches and locusts do not. Have you seen a roach or a locust about the house? No? that's right. Have you seen crickets? Yes there you go. There will be roaches here. No questions asked. If you find even one you can ask me to take them away but until that day. Hah. Keep trying.
