Many of you always ask about toxin research. Many people outside the forum, and likely inside too (all things being equal), are against basic, scientific research unless it's going to lead to someone making money. Many years ago, I was in a meeting with Eye of Newt Gingrich, and that's what he said- leave it to a conservative to be shortsighted when it comes to scientific value. That was a different Republican party too, now the peeps in power are worse on this issue.

You never know where basic research is going to tell you, and that's important to remember here.

In any event, there's an article I saved, thought I'd share. It proves there is value in basic, scientific research. There is value in the US tax dollars funding projects that seem incredibly "odd" to those who have no scientific background at all (the elected officials of the US's government, at all levels (local/state/federal). Nothing like having non-experts making decisions on spending, it's like asking a car mechanic for advice on your neurosurgery operation for tumor removal- good luck w/that approach.

@DaveM a bit of biochem for you, albeit not structural from the outset.

Back in '69, some folks considered the space race little more than propaganda war with the Soviets. "Why go to the moon? There's nothing there." However, the Apollo program helped legitimize and accelerate the development of the microchip technology that is now ubiquitous in our lives.

Crazy the amount of code used to send men to the moon vs a smartphone OS!

What I haven’t figured out is why are we sending peeps back to the moon, it’s just reliving 69 all over again. Guess Felon 47, aka Don the Con still wants relive his glory racist days all over again🙄

Mars is where we should be going. At this rate China will be there first.

I don’t see any reason to go to space , but some people are brave enough to actually go there. I wouldn’t !!!!

Now we’re talking!
This is my 28th year of working with these lovely beasts, and they are still my absolute favorite animals that I’ve had the pleasure of keeping and breeding.

This fine gentleman was my 3rd Heloderma purchased in 1999 after a nice tour of the old Rare Earth facilities in Richmond Va.
While he isn’t necessarily the most strikingly patterned example I’ve owned, the background coloration is nothing short of amazing in person.

These animals have a remarkable ability to lull many keepers into complacency due to their lethargic nature in general. They are capable of INCREDIBLY fast lateral head movement, which has unfortunately led to more than one over confident person suffering the consequences.

I have more than one friend that has fell into this trap and found out just how painful their bite can be, all the while poking fun of me because I refuse to free handle my animals.

They appear sluggish but yes very fast when they want to be!!! I’ve never had a lizard before.

Thank you for speaking to complacency but most importantly, respecting the animal. I got banned from a subreddit for saying these animals deserved to be treated with respect after someone posted a video hand feeding theirs for karma points.

It's a pathetic practice, it really sheds light on the mental health of the person doing it. Would be sad if it wasn't so cringe.
You know what's cool in my book? Always leading by example (tools) and being a professional in a public setting (tools). Tools are cool.

Beautiful specimen you have!

Consider yourself lucky about the ban 😜.
I will admit that I know very little about the world of Reddit, but from the little bit I’ve seen it is full of misinformation, bravado, and anthropomorphistic thought processes, that have no place in dealing with animals that can cause serious bodily harm or death.
It’s one thing to think your hamster loves you, however it’s something entirely different when these same projections are assigned to animals that have the ability to cause life changing injuries or fatalities.
