Hello

Was watering and feeding my animals today and I came across this, my babycurus jacksoni has these white things on the mouth parts.

Can anyone tell me what it might be and the causes?

Cheers

Better pic? Might be mites or nemadotes, I would look closely and see if anything is moving. Nematodes will look like white froth, sometimes the worms are visible within it, mites look like, well, mites.

Agree with mites, i would manually remove them with a paint brush and clean/replace everything in the enclosure

Edit: in the last picture you can see them around the base of the legs too, would do a thorough check and check the other scorpions if you had it in a communal

It definitely looks like something solid and not digestive fluids.

if you manage to brush them off, and offer a clean enclosure after, then you did all you could do.

after will be about “baiting” whatever that was. If mites, they stick on inverts for a ride.

offer them somwhere better to go. Then you can dispose of the bait. When you brush it off, you will get a better glimpse of what it is.

its going to be ok though. Doesnt look like nematodes.

It was mites I took your advice and brushed them off, the scorpion was not happy but I feel better knowing he will be better without the mites, he's doing good today and will keep an eye on him for a while to see if any come back. Fingers crossed they won't. I have adjusted the enclosure for more ventilation and less humidity as I was suggested.

Thanks for your help!!

I have never seen them before in scorpions so was very concerned but I will now know what they are!

Looks like mites to me as well. God, I would hate if this happened to mine. So the thing about mites, actual predatory mites are extremely rare. Most blood-sucking mites are evolved to only target one specific species, so its more likely these are just scavenger mites hitching a ride. The whole enclosure needs to be gutted and cleaned.

And yeah, try and get them off with a paintbrush. Maybe a tiny tiny pair of tweezers if the scorp will let you.

How;d it all turn out?
I brushed all of the mites off and left the animal for a few hours, went back and cleaned again. For now I can see none, but still have it secure, new enclosure, new substrate and decorations, everything else was baked that could of been. So far, nothing has appeared and the animal is doing much better.
