Ive shared my T interest, especially my pokie interests, with my many Indian students at school(we have a contract to train Indian airline students). When I told them about P. metallica and how they are found near "Gooty" they look at me funny, see the area Im talking about and say,"no, its prenounced Ooty!"

Where did Gooty come from if its actually called Ooty?

It might just be the way they pronounce it. They did come from a town in central southern India called Gooty. At least that was what I understood.

It says Gooty on the maps. I was just looking at one the other day, because my boyfriend is in India for work and I was trying to figure out just how ridiculously impossible it was to hope that he might see some metallicas in the wild.

Maybe it's one of those regional accent or pronunciation things - they drop the G?

Dunno...

I have students fron New Dehli, Bombay and one other place I think. Anyway, they are both from northern and southern India...most are from Bombay though. They all pronounce it Ooty.

Ive been able to get some good weather info for the area from them if anyone is interested.

Supposedly the "Ooty" area is a sort of a mountain retreat destination.

I've read the type specimen for Poecilotheria metallica was actually collected at a train stop near Gooty, India.

Of course, I don't remember where I read this. :(

A very old thread, but Gooty and Ooty are two distinct places in southern India about 500km apart

Funnily enough for those less travelled, there are worlds that exist outside of the west with different cultures, different language, meanings and pronunciations.
