Years ago,I used to feed live rats and hamsters to my snakes.Just couldn't do it now. Aside from it being safer for the snake. Only defrost meals for my Burm ;)

Ohh modern man... no problems with getting a lump of frozen meat but to acctually kill it then there is a problem. I myself would become a vegetarian in a second if I felt bad about killing a rat, fish or whatnot myself.

I grew up on a farm in Ohio... I've butchered my fair share of chickens. However, chickens are some of God's most mentally retarded creations... I think sheep might be the only animal that's stupider. They are so stupid that the only thing they are good for is food. Rats on the other hand are quite intelligent and personable... it's hard to get attached to a chicken before you whack their head against the block and chop it off with an axe, but when that rat looked at me before I whacked it, I think it knew what was going on.

Since we all "hunt" at the super market now and slay or take down the that fierce family pack of hambuger and pile it up in the cart and with todays food distribution no one has to see the processing of the animal, except PEDA who actually go take pictures of it in action. That is a bit morbid in its self. I think we have lost a little of our survival instinct. Let someone go a week or more with out food and thought patterns will be a bit different. I have butchered many animals growing up on the farm and most bothered me at least to some degree. All it takes is to have one as a pet and the killer instinct goes down hill for that species. Last week at a local pet store I heard this thump...thump....thump. I turn the corner to the feeder rodent room and I watched this little 80 lb girl pet shop employee trying to kill two rats to take home to her Burm. She was having a hard time doing it and dealing with it and did not want me to see her. I was waiting on the owner so I had to hang around. I offered to help her out and she tried one more time and succeeded. You could see the relief in her face.

i used to feel bad feeding frozen (thawed) mice to my turtle. there's no way i could kill a rat or mouse. i might be able to do a hamster since i hate them about as much as i do crickets.
