I'm cheap.

I just spent $180 on 3 tarantulas. One was an adult female.

That was my most expensive drop at once.

Was 2 different orders technically too.

If you haven't, also checkout swifts inverts, Paul at pet center, net-bug.net, great people and great variety.

The most I've dropped is around 400$ for 12 spiders, great variety of NWs and OWs

I see. Mostly I just save up for big orders, here and there I wil buy smaller, but its usually only when buying an expensive T

My first order was...wait for it...1 sling. 1 $10 sling. And it's not like I didn't know what the shipping costs were before I completed the order, so I can't even use ignorance as an excuse for such a feat of derpitude. Did I pay for overnight shipping? Of course I did. Derp derp...derpity derp derp. Definitely will not be taking it personally if I get razzed for this one; I could have slapped myself when it finally sank in and I became consciously aware of my obvious blunder...about a month later...

My orders since then have ranged from 5 to 8ish - though it should be noted that I haven't made all that many orders yet. I think I've ordered online 3 times in total...any other additions were either pet store rescues or from a local dealer.

Now that I'm starting to seriously plan my first breeding projects, I'll be getting my new additions the same way Poec54 and skippydude do - save up a spider fund and order several specimens of the same species. Will probably go for groups of 6 from a single species, and buy between 1 and 3 species at a time, depending on cost.

I saw 2 juveniles of a species I wanted @ petshop on sale. Was enough to justify a buy. Cheaper than the slings I'd even seen on the classifieds.

Paypal is great man! Get one! :)

Paypal is my preferred method of transaction any day. Leaves me without any doubt of legitimacy

PayPal is such a pain in the butt though. They make you provide so much proof of identity it's ridiculous. I understand it's for security reasons but come on...

They had me provide my bank account number and then deposited a dollar and asked me how much the deposit was, it seemed pretty painless to me

I don't have a set amount either. I spend anywhere from 30-200 on an order. I have an expo bimonthly (probably the same one spiderman goes to) that I can go to and the locals here are great. I don't shop online because I can get more for my money by just staying local.

I found a breeder not too far from me with a good selection and I will relieve him of 5-6 Ts at a time, plus he always gives freebies.

Do the reptile expos usually carry a sizable selection of tarantulas? I'm interested in Repticon in Dallas, TX along with NARBC.
Also anyone in the Dallas area? Thanks in advance.

I've only ordered online 3 times. I try and spend a chunk of money so I can get a freebie if available and I try and spend as much as I can without getting too many spiders at once. I do that cuz box day is magic for me lol.

i will admit my smallest order i "payed" for was 1 T, picked it and the freebe, and ended up paying 10$ for shiping due to store credit on a forgotten freebie on 2 orders lmao.. i feel like i robbed him a bit but was worth the 10bucks to me lol:ninja:

My first orders were for 1 T each -- shipping often costing more than the T. But it's not a bargain to get more Ts than you are ready for.
My last (and probably my *really* last order for a long while) was for 2 sub-adults females (pricier Ts - GBB and B emilia) and about 50 bucks worth of "surprise" slings -- so -- pricey and well worth the overnight shipping.

Difference was my time spent in the hobby. I would have made a poor choice to invest more in the beginning -- I didn't know in the beginning if I would still be in the hobby a year later - now, a year later, I know I am in for the long haul and adventure.

That said -- at 13 count, I am very satisfied with my choices overall (well, 2 of the slings were more advanced in my last order than I expected) but I have gotten quite attached to them already) so they appear to be keepers.

There is more cost than the financial investment -- it's the cost of time and experience you are willing to commit to.
