I am far from being an expert on the housing (I was asking advice myself on another thread), but I'd put your aquarium on the side so it's 'taller'.
Get rid of the mesh and get the plexiglass/acrylic sheet on amazon (for like $6-$10) and drill holes in it for ventilation (for better ventilation you might need also drill holes on the top that would be a glass part)...or if it seems to much work (it is) just buy a plastic container as suggested above.

I am very new here so maybe I am wrong in asking but:

You mentioned you switched from coco "stuff" to soil, what kind of soil are you referring to?
I ask because if it has fertilizer in it, it is toxic to your T.
