I was under the impression that T. blondi and T. stirmi weighed about the same... but a tarantula-selling company (who I believe to be reputable) wrote on their website that T. stirmi can weigh up to 8 oz and is therefore the heaviest tarantula in the world.

Since T. blondi, as I understand it, weighs up to 6.2 oz, this claim would be true... but I can't find any good sources to support this. I think I searched the internet for about an hour. I know blondi can reach 6 oz... but I can find absolutely NOTHING on the max weight of stirmi.

The only thing the internet tells me is that T. blondi and T. stirmi get to be about the same size and mass, but that doesn't necessarily mean they weigh the same. Was a chubby stirmi individual ever recorded as being 8 oz?

Does anyone here know?
Thanks!

I always thought it was the blondi, but I could be wrong 🤔 I believe the blondi has the bigger legspan but not sure about weight

I read that by weight, T. stirmi is more massive but that T. blondi and T. apophysis have larger legspans. Unfortunately I cant remember where I found this, but I'll look and see if I can find a reputable source.

Yeah, same here. If one of them had to be heavier than the other, I assumed it would've been the blondi, so the info on the website surprised me. XD

I hope someone does that! I ought to buy them both and then weigh them, haha :3

Oooh, that's interesting! Thanks a lot--good luck in your search!

Well, Wikipedia isn't exactly "scholarly", but this is the closest thing to an answer that I can find:

"T. blondi is generally thought to be the heaviest tarantula, and T. apophysis has the greatest leg span."

its been the general consensus for over a decade
Oh, I see; that's very interesting. I've been part of the hobby for only a year, so I haven't heard that before! It'd be awesome if a professional, scientific study could be performed in order to confirm that stirmi's the heaviest, once and for all. That'd be cool! :3

My gravid stirmi. She is a chunk!
IME (I have over 30 Theraphosa), weight is near as damn it a draw between stirmi and blondi but apophysis can actually have a slightly larger legspan but they are 'leggier' than stirmi/blondi and not as thick bodied.

Also attached is a pic from one of my gravid blondi from last mating.

Obviously if gravid, not a true test of weight but just thought would share these chunky lasses anyway 😉

I'm surprised that those butts don't have objects orbiting them. Massive!
