What would be a good Black new world tarantula for a beginner?

Hey, I’m 19 and extremely new to the hobby. I opted out of getting a scorpion and am studying tarantulas and have a copy of the Tarantula Keepers Handbook. Is that still a good source?

Anyway I love the look of black tarantulas? Are there any that web a lot, I find that to be a very interesting behavior. I don’t intend to handle my tarantula due to from what I’ve read, it’s not a good thing to do, but I’d like a docile tarantula. As in a species that isn’t known for hairing frequently or biting frequently?

How about a Grammostola pulchra? Beautiful, black tarantulas that are great for beginners. They do grow slowly, though.

I def agree that G. pulchra would be an awesome choice. You may want to also look at Tlitocatl vagans..... a black T with a fire red abdomen, what's not to like?

Ive always preferred the look of T. vagans more than pulchra...JMO....its a faster grower and more aggressive eater...a bit feistier, too, but nowhere near out of the realm of beginner territory....and you can get like 8 or more for the price of one pulchra.

B. cabocla is another option....Also most female Pamphobetus are jet black following a molt...but they do brown out as they near molting.

I've had a G. Pulchra. They are good for beginners. As mentioned above, though, they do grow a bit slow.

Is not the biggest specie, but they are big and chunky, looking from a begginer perspective.

@Piek did you take in consideration the Acanthoscurria geniculata? They are not full black, but they grow pretty quick and have one of the best feeding response.

They're built like tanks but still wouldn't personally add another B. I'll stick to my original BBB.

G. pulchra was my first tarantula, purchased as a 3/4" sling. I love the species and think they look great, but I wouldn't recommend for a beginner. They grow so slow that you will probably get bored, I lasted 3 weeks before I started buying more slings of different species.

I agree with @cold blood, T. vagans would be a much better choice. I purchased a sling as a gift for my brother 2 years ago, I've been jealous I can't find more since then. Much faster growing and awesome eaters!

Yeah the pulchra grows very slow, my geniculata outgrowed the pulchra in a half the time.
