What tank pet should I get?

How can your mom not let you get a T, but let you have a vinegaroon? Like, I realize they're not the same--but--that little guy looks far more intimidating than a tarantula, in my very personal opinion.
Arachnophobia is very specific. At least, it was in my case. I was terrified of spiders but scorpions never elicited the panic reaction from me that spiders did. Not a clue why. An Emperor was the first arachnid I ever held, and he helped bridge the gap so I could then hold a tarantula. After that I was totally hooked. :3

Huh. I wonder why that is? That's actually super interesting... I took a psychology class that went into phobias a little bit, but I can't say as I was really paying attention...

Well I've been getting a lot of recommendations for Crested Geckos, so I think I might take that route... but in the interest of exploring all my options, does anyone know anything about Gargoyle Geckos?
Care is very similar. Gargs are just a little harder to find and tend to be a little more expensive. Rhacs are pretty much similar to each other but with different sizes and paint jobs.

A little bitty baby C Porosus is always nice, especially if you have siblings, other relatives and friends who like to poke at animals with their fingers.

Some guy with a 50 gal tank was asking me to get him an alligator today. I certainly see the appeal, but plan for the adult size of the animal! They aren't disposable!

Land crabs are extremely cool, you pick between small ones that breed easily in captivity and large ones that live for many years and are personable.

I also recommend garter snakes (Thamnophis). Good to watch, and some of them learn to be cool with the handling idea. They're really quite intelligent as far as snakes go. I'd just wash hands and equipment with soap and water and you should avoid salmonella.

I have about three to four years experience with chameleons, they are very interesting pets! And a Ball python would also be a good choice because they do not require much room, 30-40 gal minimum. If you do choose a chameleon, a good starter would be the vields or panthers.:coffee:

I second geckos, but land crabs are way cool. Gecarcinus quadratus have great colors. Crayfish are awesome too.

Do you solemnly swear to care for this animal, to love, hug and cuddle, through sickness and health as it tries to eat you every other day, until it succeeds or Australia Zoo agrees to take it off what's left of your hands?

Land crabs would be cool but they breed like wildfire. They are insatiably curious.

I have had fiddler, red claw, & moon crabs in the past, and I have always liked the idea of getting land crabs. What specific kinds do you recomend, and where do you even acquire them from? Have you had vampire crabs before?

Surreal meal. We were having a picnic beside a stream near here. A crab came out of the underbrush so we sat very still. In about 10 minutes we had 5 crabs inspecting every inch of our meal, even circling a bottle, peering at the distorted view it gave. Then one sort of stole a slice of pizza, dragging it off a couple of feet then, starting on the small end of the wedge it seemed determined to eat the entire thing right there. What the heck don't those things eat?

Thanks you guys for all your great suggestions and advice! I decided to get a Crested Gecko, since I hear they're good for beginners. He's settled in quite nicely, and he is so adorable! I know the tank set-up is a little sparse yet--I intend to furnish it a little more with some branches for him to climb.

So, now that I've updated y'all on the situation, please--carry on with your delightful (and fascinating) crab conversation. (I was really considering that crab idea for a while, haha)

Thanks, guys!

So why can't you keep crabs in with the gecks? Rescued a baby crab crossing a road today. Maybe an inch and a half and ready to take on the world/rip my fingers off: "Listen kid, I pulled dungeoness crab pots for a couple of seasons. You'll have to do better than those toy pliers."

crested geckos are easy as heck to keep... so are leo geckos (although slightly more difficult that the crested IMO).
I don't know.... get mice. or pygmy mice, those are always fun. Not exactly something you can hold, though, and they jump HIGH!!
