What Species Is This?

I do a lot of macrophotography, mostly studio, but lately outdoors now that I've discovered that almost nothing here appears a second before the sun goes down.

Most of my insect/arachnid photography takes place in and around the garage doors of my apartment complex. The subject in question lives in a web projecting outward from the gap in a garage door.

At first I thought it was a wolf spider, but apparently they don't spin webs. Does anyone have an ID?

That's rather obvious basin, I've never seen palps as bulbous as these - Mike Tyson style.

See you type that but I showed the pic to both Samson and Pandora and they where entirely dumbfounded. Didn't even mention the spider was a MM.

That's a fault. These are basins pets, and you miss a lot of fun and great animals when you don't watch his videos .

I have watched quite a few of them, I have seen his mastiff and his parrot, the names eluded me just for a few mins - excuse my ailing memory! It's a part of my condition!

Mostly what lives around the apartment is orb weavers.

I have watched quite a few of them, I have seen his mastiff and his parrot, the names eluded me just for a few mins - excuse my ailing memory! It's a part of my condition!

I don't talk about humans. So there's 4 names I'll mention.

Samson/Samce - Bullmastiff
Pandora/Pan - Parrot
Zeus - Tokay gecko
Harley Quinn - Tri coloured hognose snake.

A couple of nights ago, I caught him outside of his web. Unfortunately, I switched from AV to manual on my Canon T4i, and somewhere in the process it decided to go from f/16 to wide open. Needless to say, almost all my images for that night were out of focus except for tiny slices.

I plan to check on him every night or two to see if he moves out onto the surface of the garage door so I can get a whole body shot.

Your time with him will be very limited. He'll be off gallivanting looking to get lucky.

Fortunately, lately he's been at the mouth of his web every night that I checked. I just hate that I screwed up a really good opportunity for a great picture. Oh well, it happens.

But at least you don't have to wait a week these days for your prints to come back only to find they where awful.

Been there, done that. I shot a ton of pictures of North Korea for an OPFOR class back in '81 and they were all over-exposed. Fortunately, the lab was able to rescue all of them. I've still got the 500mm Soligor mirror lens I bought to capture the images.

This is a mature male grass spider (family Agelenidae, genus Agelenopsis) . Those distinctive round emboli on the palps are diagnostic of the genus.

I could have sworn that I saw some other species with similar structures on the palps on photomacrography.net, but couldn't find it.
