I was thinking Darkling Beetles, but I've been doing some looking around and its not.

I hope whatever it is, is carnivorous. Those jaws look like they could do some damage.

Thanks! I researched about them right now. Mine is shy at feeding right now, I had to hold a cricket with some tweezers. I'll let it eat on its own from now on though.

did it emit a foul smell at all???
Possibly Scaphinotus sp or a Bembidion sp.
Can you provide a rough, or exact locale as to where it was found?
thanks.

Not really, though it kinda smelled like the inside of a computer. Smelled like electronic parts... found that kinda rad.

Well the beetle died after day 2. It was in a kritter keeper with repti-sand and a lid full of water every day and it feasted on 2 crickets. 1 per day before it died. It was so cool man, first time ever seeing a ground beetle like that here where I live.

ALSO!!! After dance, my friends called me over to fool me into thinking that my friend dropped his "toe". When I looked, it was some kind of grub. I picked it up and ran around scaring a couple of friends with it haha, it was a blast. Then I put it in my pocket, went home, then scared my family with it, also fun! Well now I have it in a 32oz. deli-cup full of moist coco-fiber. I know I'm doing it wrong so experts... Please ID and explain, thank you! :D

edit: i mean the calosoma, btw. i do find random grubs all the time, too, though =P

Grub looks like it might be a June beetle. I'm only guessing by comparison of pictures though...

Omg your lucky. I've been living in the same area since forever and this is my first time ever seeing a ground beetle and a grub in person. If you actually get me some then I'll be forever grateful, but you don't have to. I appreciate it though :] You can still get some if you have time {D They're cool!

So does anyone know what to do with these grubs or have any idea what sp. it is?
EDIT: Did some google images searching and it looks real close to a June beetle, but I'm no expert. Actually... I don't know the legs look too short.

Yeah, my first guess was a chafer beetle but those had longer legs than your's does. That red spot behind its head might assist in finding a match.

If you want to keep finding beetle grubs, try digging under grasses or other very thick vegetation after winter. Sometimes they make themselves known when there are dying spots of vegetation even though its been watered regularly.

The short legs and black head on that grub is something I haven't seen before, not that that's a big deal but, not the generic June Bug, I'd raise it. Haha, "computer bug".... I think the Calosoma, might have been out of ammo, esp. since it died. I've found something similar at least, mailed to Bman, they seemed a little fragile to me.

Yeah, raise it up. Try some different types of plant roots and see if it eats any of them.

I'll trade you a sack of premium dog food and a box of Milkbones for a box of larvae;)

dude, if you really want all the random larva and poop i pull out of the ground i am more than happy.

we can talk about the business of milkbones another time =P

i am planting a hill at my dad's house this sat. i will set aside whatever creepy crawlies i can and ship them to you. just pay me for shipping and you are good to go

of course, i fully expect that if i am looking for larva they will evaporate in a puff of irony. i am... the world's.... *worst*... bug hunter =P

edit:
lol, actually maybe you better throw in a milkbone or two. poor old Loki is rather expectant of his little snacks when i am doing yard work for my dad =P
