What is this? Cyst?

So I got this A. Pallidum female from a guy who had to give up his collection about a month ago. I noticed the discoloration on her back, but thought it was from hair flicking.

Today as I was getting ready for work I noticed she has a sore on her side and noticed in an older picture I took her abdomen is slightly misshapen.

She has eaten since I've had her, but refused last week. I'll offer her food before taking more pictures tonight. She looks due for a molt for sure.

Is this a cyst? I'll take some better pictures when I get home tonight if necessary. She's in isolation for the time being

Whatever it is, if it's eating normally then it shouldn't be a problem and it would probably be better in the next molt.

I sure hope so. Pallidum is the only CITES controlled Aphonopelma, so I feel obligated to find her a mate. I would be devastated if she didn't make it.

I’ve seen worse cysts but only time will tell she may be fine.

I would skimp on the meals to keep her abdomen on the smaller side.

Definitely don’t feed it or very little. My AF emilia had one just like it.

looks to me like she got stuck and squeezed through a tight space, possibly between the side of the enclosure and the bark or something similar snd scraped off most of the outer setae in certain areas where the surface was rough

i might be wrong but it doesn't look like an injury or cyst to me

you may want to check if there is a place where somehing like that could have happend

did the burrow collapse?

I had considered that as well. Her burrow consists of a space under a large piece of cork bark that she excavated out. The piece reaches wall to wall and can't fall. There is a small gap at the front she may have tried to wedge herself through.

I'm not worried about the patterns in the setae, but the white spot at the base is concerning. I took a closer look and it looks more like an injury to me than a cyst, but I could be mistaken. It looks to go through the exoskeleton to some extent. It's dry, no hemolymph leakage, so I think she'll be ok after a molt.

I removed all decorations from the enclosure in case they somehow caused it, and was already planning to give her a larger enclosure after her next molt. Now if only she wasn't Aphonopelma so I didn't have to wait a century for it...

it looks like the exterior of a booklung to me, thus the different texture and injury like flap

i can see how it could look like a cyst or injury

again you will have to do the final determination if it has been injured or not, i can only go by interpreting what i see in your pictures

I'm an idiot. I think you may well be right about that. I'll look again when I get home.

The first three pics make abdomen look a little odd shaped and second batch of pics look like worn off setae. So it confused me …

Both. Her abdomen is a bit misshapen and it centers around the left front book lung. It also looks like that book lung is more "exposed" than the others. I'm not really worried about the setae.

Unfortunately the only camera I have is my phone and it's not very good. It's gonna come down to time. I think if anything is wrong it comes down to some kind of mechanical damage from something in the enclosure. One of the sticks, or the cork bark. Just gonna have to wait for a molt.
