My mom asked me what collecting tarantulas was called today and honestly I didn't know what to tell her besides "tarantula hobby/collecting". She said she was curious because stamp collectors have a title and things like that. Do tarantula collectors have a name? What would you call yourself?

Philatelist....stamp collector

What we do really has no name...
Same thing with people who keep ants...fomicaryists?
I guess that would only apply to ant farm enthusiasts.

One of the better general questions ive seen on here in a while...good job.

In the UK it's generally referred to (in spider circles) as "The Hobby". Not that that's particularly helpful for people outside "The Hobby"!

First rule of "The Hobby".......You don't talk about "The Hobby"! Now I've gotta turn my back on ya!

Joking aside, if people ask about hobbies or interests I tend to just call myself a tarantula keeper.

I've heard/read the term "arachnohobbyist" many times. The trouble is that it doesn't refer specifically to the love of tarantulas. :(

Arachnologist would be incorrect unless you had a degree in biology with a specialization in arachnids. There are few of these on earth. Arachnoculturist would probably be more correct.

I just prefer to call it " the dark side" , " the addiction", or "the hobby"

I would think that, sense Herpetoculture is the hobby of keeping 'herps', (reptiles & amphibians) I would say keeping tarantulas and other arachnids would be Arachnoculture.
The study of Ts and other arachnids would be Arachnology.

No, arachnologist would not be incorrect. Arachnologists are people who study spiders and/or other arachnids. You don't have to have a degree just to study spiders, although it probably would help. I myself just collect and don't really study them, observe would probably be a better word. But the term still applies for many people on here.
