I always see posts that say R.I.P. lost to DKS, what does this mean?

Its a slang term for a condition that seems to afflict some Ts. It stands for Diskinetic syndrome, but as I said, it is just a term used to describe the symptoms (irradic movements and behavior.) and is not anything official. A quick search for DKS will pull up tons of info. :)

It is not slang, but an acronym. DysKinetic Syndrome is a name given to similar symptoms. There is no verified cause, because not all cases are the same problem. Most don't survive the symptoms, but some have molted out of the problems.

A search of DKS will not yield anything, as a search will not pull up things with 3 or less letters. Go with dyskinetic syndrome, or just syndrome.

^^^^What she said. (Except it's not an acronym. If it was DS, it would be an acronym. Thats why I phrased it the way I did. Done splitting hairs. On with the thread. :D )

It is a horrible descriptor for a set of "symptoms" which include spastic movements. I'm not going to repost all the arguments or thoughts on it, but I will say that in 15 years, I've never had it. I will also say it is a pretty "new" occurrence in the hobby, which you can see for yourself via searches.

If you use google, and not the HORRID search features of vBulletins, you can easily search "DKS" on "arachnoboards.com", that will pull it all up. There is an issue with how the indexing of this host program deals with words less than 4 characters. No big deal, just use google or yahoo or bing or whatever to help you get better access to the information on this site. There are other discussion boards which also have mounds of information, again, they're all accessible via google or other search engines.

generally acronyms have to be a word that is pronounceable. not all initialized abbreviations are acronyms.

the important points have been covered but bear reiterating cuz they get missed so very often: DKS is NOT a disease, per se. it's what ppl call a set of symptoms, likely caused by a wide range of things.

I know I made a few jokes here, but yes, it was a very interesting topic, but Im just wondering how common DKS is? Is it one of the main causes of T deaths?

idon't think i have ever seen it. out of maybe 2k tarantulas that have passed my way so far

basically it is gimped motor function or reactions. there are tons of things that can do it. pesticides, obviously. getting scorched... that is a relatively brief spike in temperature that breaks but doesn't kill the bug. i half suspect certain kinds of depressurization or cold shock from shipping air freight styles can do it. i bet there are a ton of pathogens that can do it. kinetic trauma, from fall or other accidents. i bet the right level and style of dehydration could do it. i bet (micro)nutrient deficiencies could do it. i bet defensive compound accumulation could do it. (iirc, most roaches have some kind of chemicals they use as defensive/repugnatorial compounds, for instance). who knows what else. that is just what i could pop off the top of my head
