Mom+ baby to show size. Unlike other snakes, their isn't any danger I can think of in putting babies and adults together, though it is probably still best to raise them seperately.
Awesome! I actually just ordered two more female egg-eaters (same species my female is), one which is apparently a large-sized girl, and both supposedly eating fine on quail eggs. We'll see.
I asked for males, the guy said he had one, then turned around and said only females were left. poo... ahh well, I love these snakes and hopefully a male turns up someday.
Also, those babies are incredibly adorable! I saw another species of egg-eater on kingsnake.com a while back, it was yellow colored and had rough scales. any idea what those were? They were tempting, to say the least.
If you get a large female their is a small chance she may be mated already...these can store sperm for a few clutches. Large females are pretty rare and usually command high prices from what I've seen. If you want to work out a loan of sorts depending on where you are my male would almost certainly be up for some love sometime. I have not tried sexing these babies but I have the hunch that they are a pair based on body shape/color-who knows. Speaking of which in the last photo it shows the colors of the female pretty well-she's got some orangey in her pattern of chevrons. I bet a little bit of selective breeding you could produce bright red medici(which are already pinkish compared to other Dasypeltis due to the color of the soil they occur on)
Who are you getting them from? If you don't mind I'd love to know your source.
The yellowish ones on KS appear to be Dasypeltis scabra of sorts-and it appears they all sold out . That is an especially variable species and can have color patterns mimicing several different venomous snakes.
I need to get better photos of her, and when the other two arrive on Tuesday, I'll get photos of them up as well.
http://blackopreptiles.com/ They had an ad on faunaclassified.com (and I scour various places for oddball things a lot). I emailed the guy and he said the ones I'm getting have eaten, and one particular female is fairly large. We'll see when I get them. I think they mostly deal with venemous snakes and the egg-eaters aren't directly listed on their website.
From the one photo I saw, they appear the same species as what I have, but he didn't list a species name. We'll see when they come in!
I'll probably sell/trade at least one once I get a few meals into them voluntarily(provided whoever gets it is comfy with tube feeding-otherwise I could simply raise them to quail egg eatin size). I would love to trade for an unrelated one to diversify my bloodlines.
Or trade for one....But for T's....I don't have an egg-eater....member...had my buddy look @ show...but price musta been more than the $50, that I limited him to, for W.C. specimen I have access to Qual eggs....and Quail -N- Pheasants for BBQing :} - J
Probably. He listed them as being $65 each, but he let me have two females for $100 total. Definitely was worth it IMO.
/edit- that is unless they come in sickly and dying, lol. I'm sure they won't, just never dealt with this dealer before, especially considering venomous herps are illegal here with exception to rear-fanged.
Seems the babies grow an inch every time they get fed. They are now over a foot in length! Cooling the male for a bit in hopes of another clutch in spring 2011(based on breeding reports from Europe it is likely going to be substantially more than 5).
