I am interested to hear how many of you use water dishes for your scorpions and if you keep always a water dish in the terrarium or you put it just sometimes?

I just use a dish for my 20 gall, Emp tank. Others i lightly mist water on the side of the tanks.

My scorpions all have water dishes, but I only fill it once a week. It usually evaporates within a couple of days.

I never use them, I've always found they are surplus to requirements, scorpions seem to be remarkably well adpated to drinking water condensation on glass surfaces. Plus if, like me, you keep scorpions in tupperware containers stacked on each other water will just spill.

It is quite interesting to hear so different opinions. I have asked this question because when I returned home yesterday I found my Buthus occitanicus dead :( I didn't know what was the cause but I supposed he was dehydrated. I immediately put a little bottle cup with water in all my scorpion tanks and half of them started drinking immediately. I was sure I read that scorpions take all their moisture from their prey. I did mist occasionally, but of course, some tanks could be easily forgotten. Now, the Buthus was reluctant to eat these days but I couldn't think he was going to die. Many other were treated the same way (including many scorplings) and are doing fine...

I don't use water dishes too.
In my opinion they only make your life difficult when its feeding time...

Scorps do take the neseccery water from their prey.

I only pur some water occasionaly in one side of the enclosure and usualy the specimens who didn't accept food for long periods of time do drink.

Filip,

I prefer misting over using a water dish, and rarely use a water dish for my scorps.

I fill one only for my centruroides as others seems to do fine with misting. Well, all of them exept tityus ar sort of arid areas inhabitants (Hottentota, Buthus)

I use very small bowls

I have found that all of the scorpions I have had drink from their bowls quite often. Also, by very slightly overfowing when topping up you can create lower substrate moisture which the burrowers seem to like, they then have the oportunity to burrow to damper sand/soil, seems to work with the ones I have any way, hyd.troglodyte, wahlbergii, scorpio maurus, and cavimanus

I only use waterdishes for my adult tropical scorpions witch are in big tanks. The rest are inn small plastic boxes, so I only moisten the substrate for the species that needs it.

I keep water dishes in all my tanks except my desert setups. But I have perhaps only seen them being used maybe once. I use them as precautionary, just something that doesnt hurt to have. If they use it, great, if not, well thats not my fault :p

I use a water dish against the side of the tank where i have my heat mate, to keep the humidity up, it stays around 75 - 90% with the water toped up, when it drys up it will drop to 65 - 70%. I do mist when i notice the top 3-5mm of top soil goes dry.

http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2005/01/05/scorpion-on-roof.html has a picture of Centruroides flavopictus drinking (bottom).

I see them often drink, especially when I forgot to give them water for some time. I have seen my scorpions drink from droplets on wood/stones, and moisture on the glass and from the bottle caps. Often they groom themselves afterwards.

might be considered a (semi) desert, yet I saw moss growing on stones in parts that got some shadow, and the moss was very green and wet (have to add that to the entry), also under quite some places the soil under the stone was moist. I never saw scorpions on dry, dry sand under stones. It was always a bit moist.

Thanks John, that's very interesting information.

I have water dishes in all my tanks except for my H. trilineatus tank, the only dishes I keep full are for my C. gracilis and my emps, all the other tanks I use shallow dishes and only fill them once or twice a month.
