Hi everybody,

2006 had been an at least interesting year around here, regarding true spiders. Presented us some never before seen species, brought us eagerly awaited and long seeked for species, not bad.

Time to relax a moment and remember about some good things like these:

That strange yellow thing

Finally, the ogre´s

Snipers

... to name just a few.

Guess some of you liked these threads, too:

Phoneutria reidyi, first experiences

(and of course)

The "Monster"

Quite nice. For a start. ;)

At least one guy at the boards told me, he´s thinking i´m taking my mouth full. Well, i got used to this during 2006, as i heard this from several people around here, especially regarding the possibilities of getting hold of certain Phoneutria spec.´s and of course regarding breeding of Phoneutria.
Strangewise, the older the year got, i didn´t hear such comments from that people, really, really strange.
Now again. Personally, i really don´t think i´ve ever taken my mouth full here at the boards. I don´t even know you guys personally, so why should i do this?

To give you all a better understanding, what it sounds like if i really take my mouth full, i´ll now do it for the first time. Remember one thing, though, i´m used to deliver...

Gonna give you all a little sneak-peek, about what to expect in 2007:

1.) Never shown before species, in fact, it may very well be that these species have never been kept or even photographed before.
2.) Remember that boring tailless whipspiders and scorpions? You don´t really think those are looking weird, do you? Well, i´ll show you what "weird" really is.
3.) Liked that "Monster", that flooded half Europe with its offsprings? Thinking such sizes are a major-exception? Better think twice, the next monster just arrived...

Got some little present from south-america, again. Gonna show it to all of you, over the next days. Got them all: Phoneutria, Ctenids, Sparassids and even more.

Watch out!

Greetings, :D

Stefan

Your "Monster" would be a normalsized fera according to people who collects them in SA.
Good for you that you getting some new spiders but I fail to see the point with this post unless you try to sell some surplus

Hi there,

thanks for the feedback.

I´m still busy with unpacking and rehousing.

@ Lelle

P. fera? When i saw her yesterday evening under rather bad lightning, i thought i might have an idea about the species, though NO P. fera. Today, under direct sunlight there showed some rather strange colours up, strange at least for the species i had suspected. So for now, P. spec., again.

Standardsize? Guess i will discuss this in an own thread, too interesting topic.

Rehoused the lady already but she still prefers it to hide, so no pics yet. Everything else seems ok, though, the lady inhaled five adult crickets, one after the other, without being skinny. Guess there is something cooking... {D

@ Caco

Yeah, that yellow thing was indeed a highlight! Major hard to get hold of unfortunately. I´m quite sceptic, about being able to show up again with one (let alone many) of those again.
If we should be able to get hold of another specimen we have at least a clue now, how to make them accept prey.
Thanks Gordon!

@ Michael

Thanks for that hint!
I was a bit torn, about what creepies to shoot first, but if there are more sparassid fans out there, why not start with this one.
Rehoused her, but don´t have pics yet, as the lady prefers to sit in a "bad spot" for pics.
Damn, are those things fast! Sure, Phoneutria can go lightning fast, too, but at least you have to give them a reason. With this freakin spider i got the feeling she´s running just for the fun of it.
Guess i´ll just snap some pics and send it to a buddy who´s major-fascinated by sparassids. Just not my kind of spiders.

@ Steven

The weirdies? That wish can be fullfilled exactly now, as those are really quite easy to shoot.

Here we go, i´ll start with my personal darling:

Ctenidae ssp., approx. 4" legspan, apparently this specimen can´t climb at smooth surfaces, which i know only from genus Ancylometes. The spider is quite calm and easy going.

Steven, have look at this. No spider, no millipede, scolo or something. Opiliones, Metagyndes spec. from Chile. This is now the third species that got introduced to Europe. Very strange creatures that are social and eat plants, fruits, vegetables as willing, as they scavenge.

Male:

Females:

Some quick pics of some other unidentified ctenids:

Still more to come, see you soon.

Greetings,

Stefan

Hello again!
you just got one female?
they all are very fast, i also kept some phoneutrias, you know, and i can handle with that, but that'S nothing comparing with same sparr. from the phillipines and china i got... example:
i open the box -> nothing reaction
i spray a lot of warm water, all around the spiders. also at the spiders -> no reaction
then i put some crickets in the tank -> no reaction first...
then i just turned around to put my camera... the spider was gone... outside sitting on the roof of my room, eating the cricket and starring at me... i had the camera 1meter behind me.. i just turend around and put it and revolved back... fantastic fast bastards, and very exertive to catch again... ;)
so if you have some photos and informations, or the spider himself for me ;) hehe, let me know.
as you can see i changed a bit my main interests first was phon. as you, now i just keep cupiennius, sparass., whip spdiers/scorps, and scoprs himself (hottenotta, tityus, centruriodes). ;)
another questions: did you get them from brazil?!? how?!?!?!?

Hi Michael,

yep, just one female and that rather accidentally.

Sorry, the spider is already promised to the mentioned buddy of mine. Nothing too special at all, as far as i´m concerned, reminds me of H. venatoria.

The guys delivered exactly what they were asked for, kind of "Bunte Tüte" if you know what i mean, to see, what´s around there.
Only species that was sent in numbers is P. boliviensis, as i had hoped for. The limited amount of this species that got introduced during summer, had just too low numbers for my taste, to be sure to be able to keep the species alive through breeding. Furthermore, the few specimen had been sold to different people, talk about a waste...
Now the whole bulk is here with me, only the females who carried sacs had directly been given to a partner of mine, who will sell the offsprings. The breeding "material" is here with me and will stay here. Looks like several fertilized females, some females that may not be fertilized, but hey, who cares, i´ve got males too... :D
Looks good, for this species in european captive care.

Next to that, some Ancylometes that resemble one of the "Oyapok species", females and males again, at least two preggo females. Strangewise, one of the females shows some bright dots at the abdomen, the other don´t.

That fat Phoneutria is a bonus, still not sure, WHAT it is, but guess i´ll have the opportunitiy to find out, the lady looks definitely preggo.

Greetings,

Stefan

and WOOOOWWW that 1st dark Ctenidae ssp. is a real eye-catcher !!!
simply gorgous !
(it does remind me a bit of these pictures Techuser once posted:
black ctenid, but obvious not the same.
let us know when you get full ID on new ones ! (offcourse also when ya get offspring ;) )

I am awed by your grab-bag of inverts Stefan.

Those ctenids are very striking.

The second with the white spots and the last one my personal favorite resembles an eight legged persian rug. ;)

The last Ctenidae seems to me more a Lycosidae, but the eye disposition is not so clear by the picture.
Really beautiful animals indeed.

Thanks for these posts Stefan. :worship:
They have been very educating and interesting readings. Wish that more people would go into such details though.
Anxiously waiting for next posts/threads coming from that direction :)

Hi all,

@ dtknow

Don´t mind, i like tailless whipspiders myself, i´m actually keeping two different species and try to get into breeding them... ;)

@ Emanuele

Sorry, definitely Ctenids. Got two females of that species, seems to be ground living and rather calm. One looks a tad fat, i really hope for offsprings with these. Not too big (around 7cm / 3" legspan) but nice patterns and quite easy to handle.
Will post more pics over the next days, so you can take a look at the eye configuration for yourself.
Guess, Lycosids from south-america will stay a rather rare occurence in the very next future. There had been a quite massive import of wolfes from Paraguay this year, just next to nobody was interested in them...

@ CaptainChaos

Thanks.
So, you´re interested in details? Then watch out for the upcoming thread (soon...) about size variations in captive raised ctenids, it´ll be quite into detail and could very well be to your liking then... ;)

Greetings,

Stefan
