I use moss , haven’t had the money to go buy fake plastic plants lol .. both work fine. Small tiny peice of wood also works .

Couldnt hurt to soak and bake incase they are fumigated

Look up Juglone. I'd make certain the shells aren't from the Black Walnut tree as a safety precaution. They, the presence of Juglone, would likely retard or kill any plants you wanted in the containment. Juglone has also been associated with people developing blisters on their hands after handing and lesions in the mouth.
