It is indeed an interesting question which I have no answere to, but i couldn't resist to comment on the enclosure.

That height is calling for a disaster. It's probably the biggest substrate to enclosure top ratio I've ever seen. - If your tarantula is gonna fall from the top she is as good as gone.
Friendly advice - do something about it.

Best regards,

Don

He can't. I think this is one of those front opening tanks for herps so if he raised the substrate he can't open the door without all the substrate falling out.

I agree it is dangerous for the T though.

I hope we are kidding. :)

No offense but if a terrarium is inappropriate you do not use it if you care about your tarantulas. Ofcourse the meaning behind my first comment is to change the terrarium. I can tell there is a door.

Cheers

Apologies, I did not mean to imply you did not see it.

I also do not mean that he can't and should not. I meant to say if he were to raise the substrate in the current enclosure it would make it hard for him to open the door.

(This suggests he needs a different enclosure style)

I agree with you and think he should switch to an enclosure where he can better house his pet.

Interesting observation about the different responses to the red and green lighting.

@Melo Alienware - What kind of cameras did you use?

I agree that there needs to be more substrate, both to reduce risk of injury from a fall and to allow what will be a large T to have adequate depth to burrow. No need to change the enclosure, though - simply add a plexiglass dam inside the front opening doors and you can increase the depth while still having the convenience of a front opening enclosure.

They can’t see red
They can see into green if I recall. Google is your friend, there’s a paper.

Based on this paper I think they like greens and blues.

That might work do these enclosures have an opening top lid for maintenance also? Seems like some sort of lizard tank.

Interesting I’ve never added lights to any of my cages.

It’s got opening on top i can add for the doors a middle separator and soil will stay in or i can remove the doors and just add the same glass like in the back i purchased 2X40G tanks so i can mix the parts at this moment is all glass around i removed the mash vents from the side and used glass from the other tank. Anyway i never see her climb the glass she comes out hangs outside and walks around drinks water and walks back and sometimes stays out, When i used green light she was out all the time for days just bin active but never climbing the glass i changed it to red and she walk back in her hidden spot hehe. I changed it to green again and she is about to come out interesting 🤔

The best way to use such an enclosure for a terrestrial is to lay it on its back so the doors are at the top...block off the top and now it can be filled with enough substrate to create a safe home.

I agree your observations are interesting, but I have no explanation as to why...I would have expected the red light to be the one that saw the t out and about more as ts aren't supposed to see red.

I've got hundreds of pictures of spiders with red led lights and not one was ever bothered.
I can't honestly say I've tried green because I don't screw around with my spider's per say?

I do have a set of LEDs that do have a green light so,yeah it's set to come on at 8 pm like usual. I doubt this is going to make a difference, but we'll see.

I don't have a green LED to try this but they really don't care about red light at all. It's probably because they can't see it that well.

Red LED is how I check in their burrows

That paper actually suggests that tarantulas may have full color vision, including reds, blues, and greens, or at least they express homologues of the opsin proteins necessary to detect those wavelengths.

All subfamilies possess the full complement of typical arthropod opsins. Given that jumping spiders are known to discriminate colours, including reds, greens, and blues, we cannot discount the possibility that tarantulas are able to perceive colours based on our results

I have posted several times on here that for all my inverts enclosures I only use Moonlight Blue night time lighting, never caused any stress, always out under that lighting.

But of course, no one listens because you MUST only use Red !!
