I love prairie rattlers. Lelle, you should come to Wyoming; there's a stretch of road near my hometown where an average drive after dark will yield at least half a dozen of them. I used to see twenty of them for every one snake of any other species.

are those de-venomed? if not what's the pleasure in keeping them considering they are deadly and much bigger/better at striking then a deadly scorpion or something?

Defour, you are lucky :) I hope to see some pictures of some wild rattlers from you later on!

Daillest, none are venomoids (or devenomized) - we dont mutilate our snakes here in Europe. Whats the point in keeping them? Well, they interest me.
I dont keep spiders or snakes for holding them or pet them, I would buy a dog or cat if that is my main reason for keeping a animal.

Birdmanson, these are snakes friends of mine keeps - except some of the rattlers. Im going to Expomitt, not selling anything.

Melmoth, thanks. I try to post a few more later on!

hey i wasn't hating on the fact that you keep them, i actually think that's pretty cool as i keep my snake and t's pretty much for the same reason you keep your snakes and t's... although sometimes i enjoy holding them i have a frog which is not handleable just a there for one reason, i like it.. the reason i asked what the point in keeping them is unlike all other spider's, snakes, frogs, centipede's, some scorpions, etc.. those are reeeeaaaalllly deadly and unlike the deadly scorpions snakes are MUCH better hunters since they are big, long, and fast as hell... with the speed and reach they have it's MUCH more likely that you may get bit and if you where home alone or allergic to that strong venom something bad could happen to you.. that's all..

i would love to keep one of those, devonemized of course unless it was in a 5 inch thick stainless steel cage with nothing but a liiiitle hole for air, as i think they're really cool creatures but then again i think all reptiles are interesting creatures....

when you do tank maintanence do you use one of those hooks to get the snakes out? i thought they where really aggresive snakes... i can't imagine trying to pick up a big rattlesnake even with a 10 foot pole..

good luck though and nice snakes! especially that juvenile Crotalus cerastes.. i like how it blends with the substrate..

edit: BTW on my last post i shouldn't have used pleasure bit point instead.. i guess i phrased it wrong..

The reason is just the same why I keep non-venomous snakes before or not so potent arachnids like tarantulas - im fascinated by them and want to breed them.
Im aware of all dangers in keeping venomous snakes othervise I wouldnt keep them at all.

Devenomized, venomoids, should be banned because its cruel to surgical alter a snake just for the keepers conveniency.

Offcourse I use hooks and tongs when tranfer the snakes. The aggressive nature of many venomous snakes are often very exaggerated. Im more nervous when dealing with my Phoneutria spiders...

Jakerocks that's a beautiful canebrake!

My friend captured this one locally (western NC) this past year. They kept it in a heavy wood box for about a week to see if she'd eat, but no luck, so they released her. Apologies for not just attaching the pic but it was too big

I have to ask out of curiousity: If you're using some of those thick kevlar gloves with metal staples in them, are you generally safe if you happen to slip up and get bit on the hand? Or is it more of a hit and miss thing where a fang occasionally slips through?

Would it depend on which snake bit you? I'd imagine a short fanged snake would be safer than getting nailed by a Gaboon..

I don't think those gloves would be very useul with snakes. For starters, if you're close enough to use them, you're close enough to get nailed in the face or other unprotected area. Also, the thickness of them will make it difficult to manipulate objects in the cage and the snakes themselves. They could also give you a false sense of security causing you to take chances you wouldn't otherwise take.

I doubt I'd trust them to block a fang anyway. With many snakes, it only takes a tiny amount of venom to put your life in danger. It doesn't have to go in very deep, either.

We're going to be transferring some canebrakes to a zoo next week. Hooks and tongs all the way ;)

Police use kevlar gloves when searching cars and so forth to keep "sharps" from breaking the skin. They are specifiically designed to give protection from piercing and slashing while at the same time let you keep feel and control in your fingertips.

I'd consider getting a pair of those somehow or other if i was toing to be working with smaller hots or short fanged snakes but by no means would i rely on them

Like wade said, hook and tongs baby. Esp for rattlers and such like
