Variatus Spotted Huntsman Housing

Today, I went to buy another Hogna Carolinensis and impulsively bought a baby huntsman too. His leg span is about 2 inches, he’s in the tiny vertical container that he came in with a little piece of wood. I was eager to rehouse. Well… the little guy ran up my hand when I was housing him- I wasn’t ready, freaked out and he fell to the carpet and unfortunately I injured one of his legs… i feel so bad… I quickly realized I did not have the right set up and I should’ve been patient.
Can anyone please recommend a few styles homes that will help to minimize escapes during feedings/etc? Where would the best place for the door be? Hopefully someone has some experience or wisdom they can pass on. Thank you

Doesn't sound like you're ready for the speed of a huntsman, this is exactly why you work you're way up to fast spiders. House it in an oversized container for it's size that should minimise the risk of you disturbing it and it bolting.

I won’t argue with that, I should’ve waited… but it’s too late now… My girlfriend already likes it and I’m committed to getting over the learning curve. Im going to the shop today to look around for a bigger and better set up. Now I kind of know what to expect…

I ended up getting a large switch enclosure, opens on the top and side so I should have more control. I’m not gonna lie, I’m intimidated by how fast he is so I talked to the shop manager and she said I can exchange him later on if I decide he’s too much- It’s a really fascinating spider so I’d rather keep him- but I know doing maintenance on his enclosure is going to be a struggle

Keep him! With the added room in the Treehouse enclosure, maintenance will not be as stressful like it is with a smaller container.

He’s a barylestes variatus- native to Africa. Unsure how big he’ll be in comparison to those giant Australian species, but I’m sure he’ll be close lol

Somehow, I knew that and still wasn’t ready for it teleportation is accurate- I thought my wolf spiders were fast, but they can’t climb like that huntsman adds a whole new level of intensity lol

Update: The huntsman was a little too wild, so I went back to the shop I bought him from; they were super understanding and let me switch him for a Green Bottle Blue T, and I also bought a Hogna Miami. Lol. It’s been about 10 days- obviously the T is really chill. The hogna is awesome, now I have 3 wolf spiders
