Hah! No I don't feel foolish at all. It may suprise you, but what I said was me being serious, not jesting; I just don't see the need to use spiders as a way to impress people. Ironically my friend was impressed when I had my Haplopelma Minax's fang in my hand. It isn't aggressive at all, it's so docile I thought it'd be on the death bed actually.

I've had a 'usambara' in my armpit aswell, from bad judgement during unpacking. That made me feel more extreme than B.A.Barracuss in his van.

I notice it strolled onto him right at the time he had his camera ready for the photos. I smell a set-up photo shoot of hardcoreness

So can I join the HARDCORE crew? I also let my avicularia climb in my hair and groom my B.Albopilosum with my patented tarantula-groomer

what other reasons are there for holding a tarantula than to impress others? i don't hold mine because it's better if i don't intervene and just leave them to live out their long lives in tanks for my enjoyment. this doesn't mean i haven't held mine, i just prefer not to. tarantulas are unpredictable, no matter what their perceived temperament.

but i still appreciate looking at photos of people who hold their tarantulas—especially the tarantulas that are considered aggressive.

so has bill (conipto). in fact, his pterror enjoyed hanging out there. cool thing is that he provided pictures.

i don't think he said "wow, look at this! my pterror jumped out of the tank and demanded i allow him to walk along my hands...luckily my friend, pete, was there with a camera handy."

if you handle your aggressive species wisely and aren't afraid to prove it, then yes! take pictures! i want to see them, others want to see them, and most of us appreciate them.

...just like i love to watch rob from "killer instinct" catch an oxyuranus microlepidotus. i have to look. and i appreciate the people who give me the pictures to look at.

Ahh please accept my apologies then. I only 'handle' my spiders whilst moving them; if they head towards my hand I leave it still. If they go on it, I'll happily and calmly use my hand to manipulate them. I don't as such go out my way to 'hold' the spiders though.

Obviously the minax-fang thing was a different story, foolishly I did do that to see if all was fine. I'll get pics of her being handled, though I really dislike holding her, it makes me feel uncomfortable how 'clingy' and heavy it is. Last time I was moving her and she stepped onto me, it literally stayed there for a good 3 minutes.

I know that an usambara can change at any second.I am not holding it to say look at me,I'm a macho man.The opputunity presesnted itself for photos and I seized it.

I wouldn't want an usambara THAT close to a major vein in my arm. That could do some speedy damage if he bites you there. If you MUST hold him, keep him away from your veins. ;)

I think you guys should take a look at this thread on the "other" tarantula board before you think of handling these critters!

Well a simple rule is:

If you are willing to put your own safety in danger, then you have no one but yourself to blame if something goes wrong.

I will hold my OBT till he starts showing sign's of aggression, and I have only held him twice....for a pic when I first got him, and now after his first molt.

Just if you get bit, make sure you get a pic of the area as it progesses, take the camera to the hospital with you too...

If I ever get bit, I will have my wife photo'ing like mad, while I scream in pain and vomit...lol...

The whole point is to not get bit.If I get him out he crawls onto my hand and as of yet,no agression at all.At 3-3.5 inches I'm sure it would be painful.

Speaking of bitey things......

That genic in your avatar looks like it ate the world. Is that what you fed it so you could hold it, Jon? I know genics are ALWAYS hungry. I had a 1/4 incher take a bite out of me one day as I was unpacking it and moving it to its new home. After that, I wouldn't even THINK about holding Predator, my 5 inch female genic. ;)

Reason #5,106 T's are banned in NYC. Holding display only animals aka orange bitey things. ;)
