Urticating hairs...

What's your worst? I can't find anything like this anywhere. It's either B. boehmei, or L. klugi. Leaning towards the Brachy, it sure likes covering the lids with hairs. I had both open that night, and I was drinking. I forget which lid it was, but I set the lids down wherever, I just make sure to flip them over so the hairs aren't touching anything. That night I set them on my bed. I remember I went to put a lid back on, and the magnets repelled, so I hadn't flipped it! Well I just went on about my business thinking nothing of it. UNTIL. I can't think of any environmental anything else I could have contacted, and at first I thought it was shingles, but shingles I hear doesn't cross the midline, and this did on front and back. The full shebang lasted 2 weeks easy, took me out of work for a full week, I couldn't bear to put pants on. 2 months later the redness and occasional itch remains.

Shingles on average effect older people like seniors. It's very painful and I had two family members get it. It can last for a while then will go away.

I've had a few UrS on the back of my hand in 2020 by a T. albopilosus. It itched worse than chiggers for 3 days straight. On the third day I had a hive or giant welt then all symptoms were gone.

I've never seen anything like in your photo of UrS on a person's skin. I mean it definitely could be I just never seen that before

I'm glad you brought this up as I have a Brachypelma baumgarteni and I was completely unaware Brachypelma do this.

I know shingles looks like a red rash. It can be a small area or it can cover large portions. If you ever had chicken pox which I did as a kid then shingles can happen usually after 60 years old. It was recommended for me that I get the vaccination when I turn 60.

Have you tried Antihistamine cream? That from what I understand helps if you get UrS on you.

I tried everything lol. Vodka and 90's anime worked best. Ghost in the shell. Cortizone did nothing, the blisters split after a couple days then it was moot. Benadryl helps but good luck staying awake lol. It's true you build an allergy over time, at least for me. I held Ts all the time as a kid, now. a hair floats onto my arm and I break out.

I’ve never had a rash that bad from urts but one time I had trouble breathing and if it had gotten any worse I would’ve gone to the hospital. It was from cleaning my n coloratovilus cage without gloves. Now I clean outside of my cages once a year to prevent this and wear gloves during rehouse. I have a thread but couldn’t find it .

Don't underestimate brachy hairs lol. They're pretty for a reason.

No doubt, and now I'm fully aware of their potency. I'm sensitive to UrS too but only had a very few from that albopilosus and it messed my hand up.

I'm usually very careful. Giant container to put enclosures in for rehouses, gloves, face mask and entire face protection. I know I look ridiculous with all the head gear but I do not want any UrS in my eyes or respiratory system. Enclosures get cleaned outside and old substrate gets bagged and thrown in outside garbage can right after. I also wear protection cleaning them outside.

My neighbor's think I'm nuts or a mad scientist but who cares lol

I'm not careful at all, and my neighbors better look the other way and keep they mouths shut if they know what's good for them. joking. But I've gotten more careful now for sure. I don't care which direction the lid's flipped or what the magnet says, it ain't going on my bed lol.

So, to be sure, this rash appeared on a section that did not receive any contact with UrS?

because that really looks like shingles or something else then UrS. I am very senstive to UrS and anything that can cause a rash. Mine never looked like that.

and yes, shingles can appear anywhere on the body, even if youre younger then 50. we can all be the exception to the common cases.

i would have gone to the Dr to be sure.

if you still have physical lesions, go see a specialist. I would do that, to be sure i dont have an infection of some kind that lingers even when symptoms are gone.

if you dont have insurance or money, try to find homeless services, they sometimes have a Dr to offer aid to people who can’t get health care.

Dang that reaction is wild! For me, Theraphosa stirmi was one of the worst. Although I never had a reaction like this!

Try calamine lotion
Treat with alcohol first
Then calamine used for poison ivy

antihistamines are useful

never seen it that bad but it’s possible each person is different

Calamine isnt my go to choice because its basicaly the same ingredients as diaper rash cream. It can work, but personaly, i dont find its worth it quality/price. Not effective for me.

i use plantain. Which you can find outside in your yard, or health stores. Its a mix of oil, beeswax and fresh plantain.

as a horticultutist, we use this weekly for wasp stings, bug bites, irritating plants like nettles and poison ivy. Plantain has components that procure instant relief. Most of my coworkers dont use calamine anymore because they don’t get relief from it.

when on a hike, if you get stung, you find plantain and chew it with a lot of saliva. Then you apply to wound. It can also be used to pull out small shards under the skin, when no tweezers or knives are available.

plantain: plantago major, or lanceolata.
i recommend everyone to grow these at home. Once implanted, it spreads like crazy. It litteraly grows through cracks. It has helped me with UrS rash.






the last photo is p lanceolata from my property. I planted one plant years ago, and now its multiplying. You can also make “wild” pesto with it.
