I too have asthma, not bad though. I never have had a with hairs in this regard. But to be on the safe side, when the hairs go a flyin' so do I (for a few moments atleast).

I've been messing with new world species for about 20 years (minus a ~four year gap when I was tarantulaless!) and the only time I've managed to get any hairs in my eyes was when I stupidly rubbed them after doing cage maintenance, and a @home saline flush took care of that. The eye was extremely red for about 8 hours but there was no need for doctor's intervention. The people who need medical treatment represent not only an unlikely event (hair in the eye) but the most extreme case of an unlikely event.

Good old Code Monkey, Voice Of Reason, Bane of Misplaced Fear, and God of Tarantula Knowledge.

I thank you once more for dispelling (most) of my fear of getting stabbed in the eye with a little hair....as stupid as that may sound. ;)

I once made the mistake of handling a T. blondi's exuvia without gloves to get a better look at it. Boy, did I regret that for the next hour!! Luckily, never in the eyes. We have found that putting pantyhose over your arms when you think you may come in contact (changing enclosures espesially) helps to keep them off. Also, running really hot then really cold water over the affected area gets the hairs off quickly, just like fiberglass.

Ive worn gloves for a while now, but only with certain Ts these being my B smithi and my T blondie, the reason for this is that as some may remember my post i got hairs in my index finger on a monday and thought nothing of it just itching it alot. any way on tuesday morning my finger was very sore, again a left it until thursday morning when it was that sore that i went to the docters, they gave me some mild painkillers. but on fri morn the pain was that intense that i couldnt move my hand and my finger was the size of a jumbo sausage so i went to the hospital. there they x rayed my hand then gave me a tetnas jab and took a blood test, then put me on a morphine drip for 30mins. after that they sent me home and told me no work for 3days as the infection was moving up my arm, after a week of painkillers and antibiotics the sweling subsided but to this day if my hand gets sweaty then the itching continues. Thank god the antibiotics worked as if they didnt then i would have been admited the week after.

So always take care and wash your hands after handeling.

I am starting to get moderate reactions to Avicularia hairs. I get them on me more than others because they are meant to be rubbed on and have the hooks on the ends sticking out of the T. Removing webbing from water dishes or sexing molts gets them on me and within about ten minutes I get about 1/2 centimeter diameter hives all over the afflicted areas and even my back and shoulders will start itching even if no hairs got back there.

James,
I have asthma as well. I usually wear a pollen mask, whilst cleaning, doing water dishes. I once did get a blondi hair inside the outside corner of my eye. YOWCH! I even developed a black eye, from the swelling.

Peace,
Gillian

James,
If it becomes horrible irritating, yes. The only reason I got a bristle in my eye, was because I was an idiot, and itched my eyes. I usually get little pimples, no biggie. Believe me, if I say no biggie, take it easy. I'm very fair skinned, and have allergic skin.
Get some cortisone cream, and rub it on it. You'll be fine..:)

Peace,
Gillian

Eye penetration? Unless you figure out how to rub the pimple on your eye, its not going to happen. Even if you rub the pimple on your eye, I still would say its not going to happen. Remember, eye penetration is a rare thing. I wouldn't worry about it so much. Even if you get hairs in your eye, its not guaranteed penetration. Flush your eye with something...uh...eye-flushable , and it should be fine. If they do get in your eye and it doesn't go down, you might want to get some medical help. I read something once about permanent eye-inflammation. *shrug*

Just my opinion. Don't sue.....well you know the rest. ;P

Sure, that's cool..
Don't worry about the pimples. Look at them as a sticker under your skin. (for those of us who knw firsthand, or fiberglass insulation)

Peace,

James,

Please don't take this the wrong way, but you're 12 yrs old. Pimples will soon become a daily part of your life. I doubt that the pimples were caused by urticating hairs, more likely a little thing called puberty. Don't worry about it. It happened to most of us even though many of us have still not grown up yet. :D

I also want to say "washing your hands" may be the wrong term to describe what you do after handling or working with your T's. What you should first do is "RINSE" your hands. If you sit there with soap and water vigorously rubbing your hands together, all you may do is drive any hairs currently on your skin in deeper. After you rinse, then you wash. I also suggest using liquid soap, so you don't leave any little barbed presents in a bar of soap for the next person to use it.

In case anybody was unaware about latex gloves: Latex allergies are quite common and the symptoms can be a bit odd, i.e. aching joints, in addition to the more usual rashes and burning sensations. Hmm, and most condoms are latex...

Karen N.

P.S. There are synthetic gloves on the market but they are about 4 times as expensive.
