Urticating hairs in my eye.

So my little G. Rosea (hardly little, she's around 4") must've kicked up some hairs while I was handling her (I usually just hold my T's while I do their cage) and god does underneath my eye hurt. Nothing actually IN my eye, but underneath feels like little glass shards sticking out of my skin.
Wondering what's everyone's experience with urticating hairs? Ever get tagged in a not-so-nice sensitive spot? How long did the pain last for you? :p

Peach (my rosea) is still my baby and I could never be mad at her and her cute wiggling bum :giggle:

I had my first packing experience last week so I had someone who is way more experienced than me come help. Well this Mm GBB was a real butt. Flicked everywhere. Got me in the face and neck. Got the other girl on the face and ended up in her throat. And I got some from my juvenile GBB earlier in the week during a rehouse and was dumb and decided to play with it's web. Worth it, though. Still have blisters on my hand... Lol wasn't a week for the chromatopelma...

I'm yet to have any issues with urticating hairs, except maybe one time cleaning my old LP enclosure I had a slight itch (which I believe was from me thinking about the hairs rather than the effect of the hairs themselves). Out of my collection the only persistent hair kicker is my B. boehmei the others will either not kick or threat pose. As my boehmei is premolt now it has stopped kicking and replaced it with threats/charges and slapping.

Egh, the title of this post made me cringe. Good thing the hairs didn't get just a bit higher or you'd be in a lot of pain. You must have touched your face with some stray hairs on your hand if you didn't see her flick. All of my Ts are still pretty small but even my 2 inch B. emilia can cause quite the itching sensation from just resting in one spot on my hand for too long. I just bought an LP so I'd better get used to it!

Oh yeah, I kinda figured that was the case since I hadn't seen her actually flick. I had her chilling on my arm while I was cleaning out her cage. (Can't do that with my A. Avic, but she doesn't flick hairs or even leave stray ones, so I'm lucky!)

I suffer TERRIBLY with hairs, I had a rosea kick whilst on my hand and my arm looked like I'd been flogged with a sprig of stinging nettles, once Lassie(9"LP) got me, I swallowed/inhaled them, I was awake all night COUGHING UP BLOOD, shivering and had feverish symptoms and pounding headache, now I'm not naive enough to believe that the hairs themselves are venomous, but it was enough to make me wonder whether it was possible for them to somehow rub venom onto the hairs via their tarsii, maybe it was just bacteria on them, maybe a bad reaction, who knows... But urticating hairs are no joke! Sometimes I wake up with my hands itching or sometimes my whole body, I can get this without having gone near any Theraphosinae spp. for days even weeks, my P.cancerides used to make me itch like mad via mere contact when I handled it. Some people dont get it at all.

I too had the same reaction to my B. emilia (pretty severe itching on my hands for a couple days), I was afraid I'd have the same reaction to all Brachys (they're my favorite T genus) but luckily I've since acquired a B. albo and a B. smithi (well I had a smithi already but it's 1") and neither give me the same reaction. I was really happy about that.

I reallllly hope I never get haired in the eye! Hope you feel better soon. Take an antihistamine, it will help, always helps me.

We need a shirt that says

It's not a rash
I own hair kickers.

I'll get small blisters on my fingers and I'm pretty sure I rubbed some on to my neck the other day when cleaning. But I have also been playing in the woods.

Getting them in your throat and coughing up blood all night sounds like Hell.

I use "running gloves" or disposable nitrile gloves. I never heard of running gloves before, until I found them and realized they're perfect for dealing with Ts! Thin enough to feel a T's movements if they're on you, but thick enough to keep u-hairs off the skin. I have no idea why anybody would need special gloves just for running, though...

Two days off work! I regularly get blisters and unbearably itchy fingers even when I've not been near em for ages.

I'm really happy my reaction isn't as severe as that. However when I own a B. emilia again I will be using nitrite gloves. Just top itchy not too. Honestly I'm not 100% positives I reacted to the smithi at all, I think it may have been a small residual reaction to the emilia that died at the beginning of March. Also something strange with him, as soon as he died his hairs didn't effect me at all. :/ I really don't understand that.

If you really want to have fun with tarantula bristles try holding a full grown t. stirmi upside down in your bare palm, Then without washing your hands rub your palm down your other arm a couple of times.

Scratching with a stainless steel cheese grater does not make the itch go away!

(some of us had to learn the hard way...)

This, oh man goddman this. I cannot use my powerball anymore to train my arms, because after 5 minutes my fingers swell like saussages and start itching :/ The itching part and blisters just comes and goes randomly, even if i havent been near them for a week

A search through the medical journals shows that there there have been quite a few cases of reported eye irritation from pet tarantulas. Unfortunately, there are also more than a few where urticating hairs have caused long lasting, possibly permanent damage to eyes. In some cases, once the hairs enter the eye, they continue to migrate deeper and deeper throught the media of the eye. The species most represented in the literature are the G. rosea and B. smithii, probably because of their popularity and "handlibility" more than anything else.

Remember, that not only can they kick the hairs, thereby aerosolizing them, but once the hairs are on your hands, you could get inflict them on yourself, just by touching your eyes.

While it's not a huge risk, it's something to be aware of, especially when there is he possiblity of permanent eye damage.
