the whole mass is about 3 mm long.

That photo shows a dried mass of eggs. Conditions must have been much too dry, and warm. The ambient conditions of a natural burrow prevents this from happening.

there just must have not been enough moisture, on the contrary i would imagine that humidity wouldn't be a major problem in NY.
