Turkistan roach ootheca not hatching

Hi, new to the forum.

I was wondering if anyone might have any solutions to my problem. I have a box of maybe 30-40 mature red runner roaches that are breeding prolifically. However, none of the ootheca (bar one) has hatched. the temperature in their enclosure is around 27c-81f and I have been doing my best to keep it humid in there (giving it a misting every couple of days).

How long have they been laying ooths for? Sometimes it can take a while for them to hatch.

It seems that the forum curse strikes again, I went to check on them yesterday and another ootheca hatched.

They have been laying since January

Ok I think they should have been hatching over the last couple months, but it sounds like they might start up soon. There can be weird delays with their ooths sometimes. Hopefully they really get going for you!

I think normally it's within a month or so, but environmental conditions can influence how quickly they hatch. If it's more warm and humid they'll hatch faster.

I agree with @pannaking22.

One thing I advise is to place the oothecae separate from the larger nymphs and adults. Even with plenty of food and water, I have observed oothecae to be munched.

I will say that infertile ooths seem to be cannibalized on. The fertile ones don't get munched on. I just leave the ooths with the adults. Make sure your red runner roaches actually been observed to mate.

I take it as you are saying females lay oothecae w/o the a proper mating in which the male successfully did it? Similar to a tarantula laying a phantom sac?

Never thought about this. Very interesting.

Yea. As far as when I isolated the adults from the nymphs, I don’t see nymphs hatching. Now I just keep them all together and it works. That’s what I know, they’ll eat the unfertilized ooth until they mated. Never ever feed all your males off to a tarantula. One male can only do so much mating to many females, and it takes a few hours for the female to be fertilized. If you kept a male and many females, chances are only A few females will be fertilized.
