So, sorry in advance for using an overused and exaggerated term but. Does anyone else feel really uncomfortable looking at moults? All the leg holes and also the booklungs. They remind me of little teeth that have been stuck into something. Makes my skin crawl just thinking about it.

Doesn't bother me, but my 10 year old son gets creeped out by them. He does fine with the actual T's, though...

Oh how interesting! I never knew there was such a phobia.

I thought that looking at the moults was just part of the hobby that everyone did.

Well, I just learned something new!

I think it got popularised a few years ago when various images surfaced of really benign things that occur in nature, such as the holes in a certain seed etc. True trypophobia I guess would be spiralling into a panic attack after seeing such an image, but there’s just something about it that I can’t put my finger on. The thing that first set it off was an x-ray of a child which showed the adult teeth, but… Hidden away, waiting to erupt.

I know someone who also has tarantulas but is really creeped out by molts. He explained to me that he's also uneasy around taxidermy displays and dolls, so maybe it's an uncanny valley sort of thing. Not sure.

The moults themselves don’t creep me out though as I have plans to display them, but THE HOLES. It’s mainly photos, like sexing ones, which are super up close and detailed. They disturb me in a way I can’t explain. Then again, I may just be disturbed, full stop.

It's not exactly the holes that scare me, but whenever they move on their own when I walk by because of the wind

The insides never bothered me but the fangs do, I don't know why.

Eh. Leg holes aren't that bad. Compared to Surinam toads.

I worked with a guy back in 2019 that suffered from Trypophobia.

I never knew or heard of this until he told me about it.

The weird thing was he pulled up info on it with pictures galore. The photos were a little disturbing but what only bothered me a little he had a complete meltdown.

I don't know how this phobia came to be but this is only the second time I've heard about it.

They have theories about it but it’s not recognised as a “proper” phobia as of yet. Some say it’s due to an instinctual fear of bacterial infections etc. that cause holes in the skin, or that we’re naturally wary of animals decorated with patterns which resemble holes, such as snakes. Apparently more common in people who suffer from anxiety and depression, and also shows traits of OCD.

Why did I Google that… day ruined and it’s only 6:30

I wonder if the phobia is so recent that it is still under research.

I hope researchers figure it out soon so as how to treat the phobia. If it can even be treated as it's a phobia.

Having a panic attack would be on the extreme end of the spectrum but most people I know who have it say that images of that nature make their skin crawl/otherwise make them feel really uneasy. Two people I play DBD with will actually try to get themselves killed as quickly as possible if they go up against a Demogorgon wearing the Geomutation skin because in game it just looks like its skin is full of holes and they don't want to have to look at it.

Dead by Daylight????

Haha I played that game alot when it first came out for years.

Between the devs and the people exploiting that game they sank it.

I used to play as the demogorgon but it's been too long for me to remember such a skin as the geomutation.

This is an interesting read:

Didn’t even know there was a word for it. The holes make me way more uncomfortable then the book lungs, it just looks creepy, especially the bigger molts.

A lot of times I get a molt and want to try to sex it, but when it comes down to doing it I can’t bring myself to spreading it out. Parts of anatomy in general just gross me out.

I can understand having a phobia as I had two, arachnophobia which I have overcome the majority of it.

The other is thalassophobia or fear of the ocean for me.

My phobia with that is more the fear of what's in the water with me in deep bodies of water, like sharks. I've had this phobia since childhood. I've tried to overcome the fear by swimming in deeper ocean water a few times which only made my phobia worse.

The fear is so intense that I rather get married again to another crazy woman than attempt to swim in the ocean or sea. Family and friends that actually know me understand that's an incredibly strong statement for me to make.

I get it. I had a pool growing up and no matter if it was broad daylight or dark I always had this fear a shark would pop up anytime. I saw a tv show as a kid where this happened, the guy could shape shift into any animal he wanted, messed me up for life. Much worse then the giant Jaws shark at Universal studios when I was a kid.
