Hey everyone,

I'm trying to get a desert scorpion but I'm running out of options.

There is only to petshops near me (30-45 minute drive) And one of them is pet supermarket, they don't even know scorps can be pets.

The other store sells lots of the more not-so-ordinary-pets. However they only sell emperor scorpions, and I'd rather have a desert scorpion.

I don't want to buy online, cause I really hate paying the shipping and handling, plus they're always the chance of it being delayed.

Is there any other way?

Maybe you can buy a skorpion of somebody on the forum? There a quite a few certified dealers here, and even more uncertified dealers (as I see it).

Yeah, but there's always the shipping and handling that I don't care so much about.

Get her/him to pack it like this:this
And unpack it like this. And then you should pretty much be set. Scorpions are tough and it will take quite alot to kill one in a post. Just use some fast mailing company. I don't see any other option.

Great advice, but I think he may be on a budget and refering to the charges.

In which case, why not post a wtb advertisement for anyone who has something like that in your area, or perhaps someone would be willing to go 50/50 on shipping with you, and you both order scorpions from the same place?

Talk to the people at the exotic pet store and see if they will order you something more deserty. I'd bet that they have at least one price list from a supplier that includes desert hairies or flat rocks, as both of these are common and frequently sold in the pet trade. Also, while a permit is still technically needed where you live, they semi-officially overlook the requirement for those two species, just as they do for emporers. In fact, chances are, the pet store doesn't even know permits are required (most don't), so just don't even bring that up.

over the internet IS the best option, and its generally alot cheaper also,
i bough this subadult Hadogenes for £25 (rip off!) and it was bein sold on the net for £9 + £4 postage (and they were bigger)

and there is much more choice on the net

The price difference doesn't seem to work that way around here. I can generally get better prices in a store, even without the shipping, than on the web. And shipping charges typically run $25-$45 on top of that. I've seen numerous examples of scorps I've paid as little as $10 for at a store, that would have to cost $25+shipping for over the web. I have bought some over the web, but it was only because they had species I wanted, not better prices. 2nd day shipping would be cheap, but most dealers either won't use it at all, and the few that will do not offer live-arrival guarantees if they do.

I was reffering to the cost. It's like $45 extra something.

Maybe you can browse and find a seller who is willing to meet you near your city or something. Your best bet is to go to a reptile show and you can go to kingsnake.com to check up on that. I wa in the same position as u and just settled for the emp

I'd rather just pay a little extra for the scorpion than pay $25 dollars for shipping.

I think I'll ask the petshop owners if they can get a desert type scorpion from their dealer.

After all they hepled me get an Albino morph cornsnake when at first all they had was darkish red orangish.

Hopefully they'll hve some desert scorps.

$45 is way too high for shipping. $35 is more acceptable, $20-something is workable sometimes. Keep that in mind when getting one from a pet-shop. If it costs more than, say, $30 for a common scorpion, check elsewhere before you buy.

There is the Daytona show in August, but since Florida requires permits, I wouldn't count on finding scorps there. Since it is a very large show, they are very careful about regulations. It should be a great show though if you're into herps.

What part of Florida do you live in? I know some of the shops that carry scorps in Florida, so I might be able to tell you where you can find one.

I live in Avon Park it's not on the map so you might not know where it is. BTW How exactly do you get a permit? I'm 15, would I be too young to get one?

Sorry, I don't know of any near you, but the one there should be able to get you a desert hairy. I also don't know if you can get a permit. The regulation is extremely poorly designed, and the information on what is required is pathetic. It's your typically idiotic Florida law, and obviously no one who knew anything about scorpions was consulted. Here's a link to the law...good luck even figuring out what the requirements are from that, since they are not included. There may be an age requirement, but nowhere is it spelled out. What you will need is 2-4 adult voucher specimens that the state will take and not return, plus $12.50 per species. I wouldn't bother for a desert hairy, as they don't enforce the law for that species.
