Awesome pics, guys!

Personally, I believe that most all centipedes exhibit a certain degree of arboreality. All centipedes that I've introduced to tall plants, wood, boards, tree trunks, branches, etc. had no problem whatsoever climbing this type of stuff. I have no doubt that when things get flooded from rain they head upward if possible to escape the flooding, in the event they can't find a dry spot on the ground. I'm also pretty sure that when prey is scant on the ground, they may go hunting in the bushes or on trees. Keep in mind, this is merely my opinion, unbacked by references that I know of. To me, these creatures seem to be built for climbing! As long as the surface is smooth, I can't imagine they would encounter much problem exhibiting arboreal behavior if needed or desired.

Peace,

Paul

Yeah, i was just wondering if there are any true arboreal pedes (i.e. spend all their time in the trees), maybe people have just seen them up trees occasionaly. I've no doubt that as paul just said, they are opportunist hunters and will probably climb if given the chance (the other day my subspinipes got out onto my desk and went straight up my curtain!), but i don't think there are any pedes likely to spend their whole life cycle in the trees. I imagine a centipede in a tree would be fairly easy to pick off by any predators. Just my opinion though.

Cheers,

Dan.

very well put

well said paul and dan, those are very good theories and well put too. i agree with both of you. this is my 2 cents, at night pedes could escape ground dwelling rodents by climbing trees and also be in reach of nocturnal insects i.e. moths, and not have to worry about the more abundant day dwelling birds.

here is a pic on todd gearhearts site, check it out.
its a s.gaopogoensis in a tree.
