(Toxic?) Wood?

My G.rosea has been moved from a piddly house (med. kritter keeper) to a mansion! (10 gal tank) with much deeper substrate and all that, i hope she's happy. But I'm using a halfed-hollowed bit of log as a hide instead of the flower pot she had before, but she refuses to use it. She just chills on top, but even that part she's webbed over. I like the effect, but I'm worried its the type of wood.

I know i've read somewhere that some wood chips/shavings (i think cedar was among them?) cannot be used within the cage at all, are there any other woods that should be avoided?

Hi Bellis,

Pine and cedar are toxic to tarantulas so they are ones to avoid.. Not sure if there is any other wood out there thats harmful.

Dont worry about the spider not using the retreat yet, sometimes they take a long while to get adjusted.

Is this the half logs you buy at a pet shop? If so, you should be fine. I have used them for years without any problems. In addition, many of my tarantulas will hang out on top, rather than under the log as well.

Where did you get the wood? Is it something you got in a pet store? Or did you find it outside? If you got it in a pet store then I'm sure it is just fine.

Edit: Windchaser beat me!

I did get it from the pet shop, where's the sigh of relief emote? Thank you for the lightning quick responses, again!

If you got them from a pet store then they are fine, they get treated for parasites before they even get shipped out to the pet stores.

I have used a hollow log from a pet store for years for my B.smithi. She lived in it for ever. Just recently though she fliied in the access to it. No she seems content to spend her time perched on top of it.
