My curly hair (male, less than 1 year old) keeps trying to molt, spends about 10 minutes on his back - but then he flips back over. He eats regularly, has access to water and seems otherwise normal. Abdomen is slightly small. Does anyone know why a tarantula would have this problem, and what I could do to help? If he is dehydrated, what are some other ways of helping him (besides eating and having access to water dish)?

I wouldn't worry yourself over it. You have a waterdish and hopefully filled with water that's a good start.

Tarantulas are known to do this while not common some do this. I've had some do this and then they eventually molted just fine.

With my adult T's if they are in pre-molt I make sure they have some moist substrate. It can be a corner or just one side of the enclosure. So full waterdish and some moist sub always helps.

I've only ever had two T's that had bad molts. Both were mature males. Uncommon as it is a MM might molt again and those are guaranteed to have major issues.

If he were less than one year old he would be a tiny spiderling, and it would be unlikely that you would be able to confidently determine his sex. Do you mean you have had him less than one year or is he a mature male?

Either way, I hope he has a successful molt soon!

At this point: change NOTHING. Provide water. Maybe keep a moist spot where some water is added to substrate. Just that one spot.

be patient: you know now that its trying to molt. Dont go poking at it if its not moving or acting weird.

in all weird situations: give 24 hours waiting time.
