My 4 year old really wants a bird, but I'll only get one that can live in a small tank (2.5 gallon preferably, 5.5 max). Are there any small ground birds that just hop around and would be happy in a small tank?

I'm pretty sure no bird in the world can be kept in a tank. Anyway, as far as I know, no - even a pair of TINY zebra finches will need way more space (in a proper wire cage) than that.

The smallest sort of ground bird you can get is a button quail, and they need, at the very least, a 55 gal tank and lots of daily walk-about leg room.

Sure do. They're not the brightest little critters. Any sudden, startling thing can make them jump straight up and if they hit mesh, it's bye-bye birdie.

HELLO YOU.

I will buy a flock of fifty and name them all Kamikaze. Only awesome things could possibly happen because of this.

A freakin goldfish would be cramped in a 2.5 gallon tank, and you want to put a bird in there? Did you mean to type bug instead of bird, because that is a really odd question. You could always cruely jam a small bird in there, but when it dies a month later you will have a whiny kid on your hands.

Agreed.

You wouldnt try letting your 4 year old live in a closet so why the heck would you think of putting a bird in such a small enclosure?

If youre going to get a bird, you need a cage- and a roomy one at that. Plenty of space to move around, stretch, climb, and explore. Then you need lots of different kinds of perches, toys etc. If you are getting a hook bill ("Parrot") then it needs interaction and time out of the cage.

I have 3 budgies, and a love bird. All of them get a couple hours out of their cages every day to fly freely. They are -very- rewarding pets to own. If you are seriously thinking of getting your son a bird, realize that -you- will be the one who is doing the work. So make your decision on the type of bird wisely. If you dont have lots of time to spend interacting with it, and taming it, then perhaps finches are the best for you. If you have time to tame, and if you want something that your son can perhaps handle under very careful supervision- then perhaps consider a love bird, budgie, cockatiel etc. Regardless what kind of bird you get it needs a proper home- not a cubicle. PLEASE do research on the PROPER care that the animal requires.

Here is a picture of my budgie cage-

Yeah, like my homegirl PrettyHate had to say, birds fly! How do you suppose a bird will fly in a volume of 2.5 gallons?

P.S. I really think you meant to type bug instead of bird. I do shat like that all the time.

You want to put a bird...in a tank...

:?

My humble opinion is that you should not get a bird.

I'm sorry, but things like this really irritate me,

DO NOT get an animal if you don't have the funds, time, patience, common sense and proper education about it.

Not to mention I personally don't think a 4 year should own a tiny bird that like. Obviously you know how rough a toddler is-Do you really think it's wise to give them a brittle bundle of bones to play with?

What kind of bird is that?

My 4 year old wants a bird very badly, but I'll only get one if it can live in a 5.5 or 10 gallon tank and hop around inside.

Any ideas?
That other thread actually brings up a good idea for this person- perhaps getting a fake bird for her 4 year old to care for would be a good option for the time being. It might sound stupid- but you can get those fake budgies at pet stores that make noise and stuff. It might actually work out not too badly- young child wants a bird, mom doesnt have the proper living requirements for the real thing- meet somewhere in the middle.

Or I could be full of crap. I just woke up...

IMO I dont think its ever smart to get something like a bird for a child that young. Its only a matter of weeks before her mind wanders to something else and then your stuck with the bird. Kids go from wanting this and wanting that. I would start off with making her work for it..even at 4 she can do chores around the house and she learns a valuble lesson that nothing is free. Have her chores "pay off" her birdie and if she stays constistant with working for her birdie she'll be more likely to stay consistant with her care of her birdie.
As for what to stick it in, I think putting a bird in a tank is a horrid idea and you'll end up with a plucker that will kill itself. Get a pair of finches in a little wire cage or something.

Because she's a person and a bird is a.....bird.

Yeah, I'm completely ignorant about birds, so I asked. Sorry to anger you so. If this hateful tantrum is the edited version, the original must have been hilarious.

Please, continue to behave in a manner that discourages people completely ignorant of something from asking a question. That's how you'll better the hobby :?

Thanks for the few helpful replies guys.

I honestly know NOTHING about birds so I asked. I figured there might be some tiny ground bird that would be fine in a small tank. I guess that's not the case.

To all of you who jumped on me for asking a simple question: You're taking things way too far. It was just a question, it's not like I have a flock of birds crammed into a tank as we speak. Try not to get so upset over an honest question.

If people didn't ask, they'd never know.
